Take Flight in Sisters

The community of Sisters will “Take Flight” with this year’s My Own Two Hands (MOTH) weekend celebration of the arts on May 11–12. Festivities start with the community parade on Hood Avenue on Friday afternoon at 4 pm, featuring the students from all three Sisters schools and their art. Art pieces donated for Saturday night’s auction will be on display on Friday from 4 to 7 pm in businesses throughout town. Some locations will also have live music. Have a quick dinner at one of the many local restaurants and get on over to the Belfry for a free concert at 7:30 pm and a slideshow of all the donated artwork.

On Saturday evening, the Art Auction and Party is the highlight of the weekend with a silent auction and fast-paced live auction, plus an upbeat band, all in the funky and creative Ponderosa Forge and Ironworks. Tickets are required for this event, the only event of the weekend for which there is a charge.

My Own Two Hands is a regional celebration of the arts and the primary fundraiser for the music and arts programs of the Sisters Folk Festival, including the Americana Project in theSisters schools.

Something Old Is New in Sisters

Three Sisters Historical Society is a new nonprofit that has been sponsoring free monthly events entitled Fireside Stories. Kerry Tymchuck, Oregon Historical Society executive director, gave his Oregon History Show and Tell in February, and in March Jan Hodgers presented Sisters and Camp Polk: Life and Times of the Early Settlers, with photos inherited from her ancestors who were early settlers. She was joined by Sisters artist, musician, and author Dennis McGregor, who sang and read from his book Dream Again about a girl and her quilt and the Oregon Trail. The April 17 program will feature Central Oregon author Rick Steber, who will present Wandering the Native American Trail. Doors open at 6:30 pm and the program begins at 7 pm at the FivePine Conference Center, 1021 Desperado Trail, in Sisters.

Future activities for the society include entering the Sisters Rodeo parade, Saturday, June 9, with a horse-drawn wagon carrying descendants of early Sisters families. In July, the historical society will have a special exhibit at the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show on Saturday, July 14, of two antique quilts originally created by early Sisters quilting groups. •
