Former 76ers guard Greer dies — Hal Greer, the Hall of Fame guard with the dazzling jump shot who helped take the Philadelphia 76ers to the 1967 NBA championship, died Saturday night in Arizona. He was 81. The 76ers announced his death on the team’s website but did not specify the cause or say where in Arizona he died. A consistently prolific scorer, Greer was one of the most brilliant pro guards of the 1960s, together with Oscar Robertson, Jerry West and Sam Jones. But he was always low key. Greer was a slightly built 6 feet 2 inches. He was not a leaper, he had no special flash, and he seldom showed emotion on the court. But in his 15 NBA seasons, with the Syracuse Nationals and their successor franchise, the 76ers, Greer averaged more than 20 points a game in eight seasons and was an NBA All-Star from 1961 to 1970. He was voted MVP of the 1968 All-Star Game, scoring a record 19 points in a single quarter. He was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982 and named to the NBA’s 50th anniversary team in 1996.

Busch captures rain-delayed race at Bristol — Kyle Busch won the rain-delayed race at the half-mile track at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee, on a cold, dark Monday for his second straight Cup Series victory. He also won last weekend at Texas. Busch passed Kyle Larson with five laps remaining following a restart with 22 laps left. It was Busch’s 45th career Cup win and marks the fifth time that he has won back-to-back races. It also was Busch’s seventh win at Bristol. Larson led 200 of the 500 laps but had to hold off Busch and Stenhouse after the last restart. He did for a while, but Busch passed him and began to pull away.

Under Armour pushed to 2020 as uniform supplier — Under Armour’s takeover from Majestic Athletic as the supplier of Major League Baseball uniforms has been pushed back a year to 2020, the original terms of its agreement. Fanatics Inc. and MLB announced a deal in December 2016 that gave the company licensing rights to manufacture and distribute merchandise starting in 2020. After Fanatics signed a deal to buy VF Corp.’s Licensed Sports Group and with it the 600-worker Majestic Athletic plant in Easton, Pennsylvania, baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said last May the switch to Under Armour for on-field apparel would take place for the 2019 season. MLB and Under Armour decided the accelerated schedule could not be met. Majestic has manufactured MLB batting practice jerseys since 1982 and has been the exclusive supplier of game uniforms since 2005. Before that, uniforms were manufactured by both Majestic and Russell. When Under Armour takes over, the manufacturer logo will switch to the front of the uniform from the sleeve.
Indians donate $37,000 more for recovery — The Cleveland Indians have donated an additional $37,000 to aid hurricane recovery in Puerto Rico. In September, the team awarded a playoff share to help recovery efforts on the island, which was decimated by Hurricane Maria and where large areas remain without power. The team’s donation, and $4,000 given by the Cleveland Indians Wives Association on Monday, will go directly to communities where Indians All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor and catcher Roberto Perez grew up. The Indians are in Puerto Rico to play a two-game series this week against the Minnesota Twins.

WSU names new women’s basketball coach — Washington State has named Kamie Ethridge as its new women’s basketball coach. Ethridge played at Texas, where she helped lead the Longhorns to an NCAA title and undefeated season in 1986. Two years later in Seoul, South Korea, the point guard won an Olympic gold medal with the United States. She was named to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. The 53-year-old Ethridge replaces June Daugherty, who was fired last month after 11 seasons.
