Driver injured, airlifted after crash in Redmond

A 77-year-old Bend man was severely injured and airlifted to St. Charles Bend on Friday after crashing into a semi-truck on Southwest Highland Avenue near Southwest 31st Street in Redmond.

Michael Henderson was traveling in a Ford Fiesta eastbound on Highland Avenue when he crossed the centerline and crashed into the rear axle of a semi-truck trailer, according to Redmond Police.

The driver of the semi-truck, Dennis Tewes, 63, of Lebec, California, was not injured.

Redmond Police and Redmond Fire & Rescue responded at about 1:53 p.m. Friday to the crash.

The responders discovered Henderson was unconscious and not breathing.

Henderson was being tended to by several people who had stopped at the scene when police and fire personnel arrived.

Police officers and off-duty medically trained people on the scene provided aid to Henderson until a Redmond Fire & Rescue medic arrived.

Life Flight arrived at the scene and landed in a field next to the crash. Henderson was then flown to St. Charles Bend, where he is being treated for critical injuries.

Redmond Police and Fire & Rescue were assisted by the Oregon State Police and Oregon Department of Transportation.
