Dorothy Alice Stenkamp

Dorothy Stenkamp was born February 9, 1926, on the family farm outside of Echo, Oregon, to Phoebe and Gaylord Madison. She graduated from Echo High School in 1944 and went to work at the Umatilla Army Depot to support the war effort. After World War Two, she enrolled at OSU, graduating in 1950 with a degree in food science and home economics. She moved to Bend after graduation and began teaching at Bend High School. She was one of the first instructors at Bend Community College, which later became Central Oregon Community College.
Dorothy married John Stenkamp in August of 1953 and moved to Yakima Washington, where she taught at Yakima Community College and Franklin Junior High. She also had a weekly television show featuring her cooking and sewing skills.
Moving back to Bend in 1960, she resumed teaching at Cascade Junior High School. When she retired in 1988, she was one of the original faculty at Mountain View High School.
Dorothy was one of the founding board members of the Cascade Child Treatment Center, one of the first presidents of the Bend Education Association, a SMART volunteer, and a member of PEO, League of Woman Voters, Allied Arts, Oregon Women’s Trail Riders, and a member of the Bend Golf Club since 1961. Dorothy was elected and served a four-year term on the board of Bend Parks and Recreation.
She enjoyed sewing, cooking, hiking, golf, wildflowers, birds, antiques and travel.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer of Redmond; and son, Steve of Bend, sister, Mary of La Grande; several brothers and sisters in-law, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
At this time, no service will be held. Memorial donations can be made to Deschutes Humane Society or the Deschutes Historical Museum.
