Work continues on the Cemetery Fire burning southeast of Prineville on Ochoco National Forest and privately owned land.
The now 1,300-acre wildfire was started on Monday by early morning lightning strikes. The Ochoco National Forest estimated more than 1,300 strikes during thunderstorms on Sunday and Monday. All other fires were contained to less than one acre.
Pam Sichting, an information officer for Northwest Interagency Incident Management Team 8, said about 170 firefighters were on the scene Wednesday. The Cemetery Fire was 20 percent contained on Wednesday afternoon, according to Sichting.
Firefighting efforts, including aerial water and retardant drops, have proved difficult with low humidity and gusty winds. Grazing and private land, greater sage grouse habitat and timber are all factors at risk.
Wednesday, firefighters planned to hold and improve already-established fire lines, look for hot spots and begin clean-up operations. Large areas of unburned fuel continue to burn within the interior of the fire.
In addition to hot temperatures and low humidity, gusts of wind up to 26 mph are forecast out of the northwest. A red flag weather warning, meaning fire risk is very high, remains in effect until 8 p.m. Wednesday night.
