Robert Ellis Smith, 77: A journalist who published and edited a newspaper covering the civil rights movement in the South during the 1960s and who later became a lawyer specializing in issues of personal security. Died July 25 at his home in Providence, Rhode Island, of a heart attack.

Anita Miller, 91: A published author and co-founder of the idiosyncratic but well-respected independent Chicago publishing house Academy Chicago Publishers, which entangled itself in a losing four-year legal battle with the estate of novelist John Cheever. Died Saturday in Chicago.
