Baldwin branches out, kind of, in talk show

Q: I understand Alec Baldwin will have a new series this fall. What’s it about?

— Steve Crane, via email

A: About an hour. (OK, we could not resist  …   that was too perfect a setup.) “The Alec Baldwin Show” will air Sundays on ABC starting Oct. 14, and it’ll be an interview program. It had a tryout on the night of the Oscars earlier this year, and it holds to Baldwin’s obvious desire to try different things (see: “Match Game,” which continues on ABC produced and hosted by Baldwin).

Actually, interviewing isn’t a new pursuit for Baldwin. He did it on the MSNBC show he had for a while, and it also has been his role on Turner Classic Movies’ “The Essentials,” on which he’s “essentially” been an interviewer about the attraction of the night as host or co-host with people ranging from his former “30 Rock” cohort Tina Fey to TCM’s late Robert Osborne.

Q: When is the new season of “Blue Bloods” going to begin?

— Chris Pergolini, Leesburg, Florida

A: The CBS police drama starts its ninth year Sept. 28 in its familiar late-Friday slot. Worth noting in Tom Selleck terms: This will be the first year it’s on when there’s also a “Magnum P.I.” in the network’s lineup, but of course, that will have a different star (namely, Jay Hernandez).

Where new developments on “Blue Bloods” are concerned, it will be interesting to see how Jamie and Eddie (Will Estes, Vanessa Ray) morph from police partners to engaged couple. Eddie now has a place at the Reagan dinner table, and that’s a big deal.

Q: Are Philip Winchester — who plays Peter Stone on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” — and Michael Mealor, who plays Kyle Abbott on “The Young and the Restless,” related? Their facial features are so similar, it would be hard to believe that they are not.

— Johnnie Bell, Golden Valley, Arizona

A: Well, they say everyone has a look-alike, but we can find no evidence that the two actors are relatives. The Wilhelmina modeling agency agrees with your suggestion that Mealor has a striking appearance, since he has work with that firm in his background. For Winchester, it’s always been about acting, which started when he left his native Montana to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.

Q: How was ABC able to put together a one-hour special on Aretha Franklin so quickly on the day she passed?

— Carolyn Wells, via email

A: While that edition of “20/20” incorporated moments from that day — including memorializing tweets from famous friends and admirers, and the in-tribute marquee of Harlem’s Apollo Theater — we suspect much of the program already had been assembled prior to the news of iconic singer Franklin’s death. That is standard practice for many network news operations, to be prepared to cover a prominent person’s life when the time comes, be it for a segment on regular newscasts or for a full special on the individual.

Q: Will “The Young Pope” be returning?

— Pete Garofalo, East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania

A: It will, though the original season of the drama shown in America by HBO was planned as a complete and finite project. Thanks to its ratings — particularly those that it scored overseas, where it aired in England, Ireland, Italy and Australia, among other locales — it earned a follow-up that is slated to begin production toward the end of this year. That will be titled “The New Pope,” with Jude Law returning (though there are questions as to whether his character survived the first tale) and John Malkovich joining the cast.

Q: When will TLC’s “The Little Couple” be back?

— Sylvia Jackson, Goshen, Indiana

A: That’s a question that didn’t have a definitive answer at the time of this writing, though the network reportedly is planning on another season of the show. There is some recent news to report, however, about Dr. Jennifer Arnold and Bill Klein — namely, that their former Houston home finally sold after about a year on the market following their move to St. Petersburg, Florida. Hurricane Harvey had a definite impact on the neighborhood where they used to live, though their previous house didn’t sustain any damage from the storm.
