Molly Beaulieu’s goal on a direct free kick early in the second half was the difference Thursday, giving Summit a 1-0 girls soccer victory over Bend High.

The match at the Lava Bears’ 15th Street Field was the Class 6A Mountain Valley Conference opener for both teams after nearly a month of nonleague play.

Following a scoreless first half, Beaulieu’s free kick about two minutes into the second half from the top of the box hit the underside of the crossbar and got in for the contest’s only goal. From there, it was up to the Summit defense to protect the slim lead against the state’s No. 11-ranked 6A team.

Storm coach Jamie Brock praised the play of sophomore Katie Smithey, Summit’s first-year varsity goalkeeper.

“She definitely stepped up and played big today,” said Brock.

While Summit, last year’s Class 5A state champion, improved to 4-4 overall, Bend lost for the first time this season and slipped to 6-1-1.

“It was a pretty even match, a good defensive battle,” said Lava Bears coach Gavin Meyers. “Neither team had too many opportunities.”

Meyers credited goalie Jenna Cornett with making some big saves for the Bears.

Bend will try to even its MVC record Friday with a home game against McKay of Salem. Next up for Summit is a trip to Salem on Saturday for a league match against McNary.
