Wolves kill fourth calf — Wildlife officials said wolves killed a calf in Southern Oregon, marking the fourth kill by the Rogue Pack in the Fort Klamath area. State Department of Fish and Wildlife officials confirmed Tuesday that the dead calf found Oct. 26 on ranch lands in Wood River Valley was killed by wolves. Three other dead calves were found over a three-day period last week. Department wildlife biologist Tom Collum said personnel are taking turns camping in a field near the ranch, and they are using nonlethal methods to deter wolves, including sirens, bonfires, strobe lights and cracker shells. Officials are checking remote cameras daily to track movement. They have set up traps to capture wolves, so they can place tracking collars.
Rape conviction — A man has been convicted of raping a woman in a Portland park in 1996 based on the results of DNA tests conducted on a rape kit that had been shelved for more than two decades. A Multnomah County judge found 67-year-old Jihad Eldeen Moore guilty Thursday of rape and sodomy after a three-day bench trial. Oregon just finished processing 5,000 rape kits from around the state using $3.5 million in combined grant money and state funds. Moore’s conviction is the fourth rape case solved in the Portland area since 2015 using DNA from shelved kits. The victim, in her late 40s, said she never thought her case would be solved. Moore faces a minimum of more than eight years in prison.
Vancouver man shot by police ID’d — Authorities said a Vancouver man has been identified as the suspect police shot and wounded earlier this month after they said he fled a traffic stop. The Portland Police Bureau said 29-year-old Jason Leo Hansen remained in a Portland hospital Thursday and that he’ll be booked into jail when released. Police said on Oct. 19 a Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office deputy tried to stop Hansen in a stolen vehicle in Happy Valley, but he fled. Police said a chase ensued but that Hansen crashed the car and ran. At some point during a search, police said an officer and a deputy encountered Hansen and shots were fired.
