Summit continues to cut it close, but the Storm’s winning streak is intact and has them in the semifinal round of the Class 6A boys soccer playoffs.

Kyle Capdevila scored with two minutes left in the second overtime, and Summit held on for a 1-0 quarterfinal win over South Eugene on the Storm’s home pitch. Saturday’s victory was the Storm’s 11th in a row overall and advances them to a home semifinal match Tuesday against Portland’s David Douglas.

Summit, the No. 2 seed in the 32-team 6A field, improved to 16-1 with its second straight overtime win. Its previous wins were 1-0 decisions, including a first-round playoff victory over McMinnville.

South Eugene, the No. 7 seed, had won 14 in a row. The Axe finished at 14-2-1.

Saturday, late in the second 10-minute overtime after a scoreless regulation 80 minutes, Capdevila received the ball from Kamdon Simmons and went to work. He beat a South Eugene defender and then beat the goalie with a left-footed shot low to the far post and under the Axe keeper.

“It was a very competitive game, a great high school soccer game,” said Summit coach Ron Kidder. “Both teams had real good chances. Our goalkeeper (junior Khael Engelman) came up huge, same with South Eugene’s. It was just a back-and-forth battle, and we were the team to put one in the back of the net.”

Kidder praised the play of center backs Emory Steele and Eros Eicher and defenders Kaden Barker and Logan Wehrman, who helped Engelman preserve Summit’s 13th shutout of the season.

David Douglas is the No. 3 seed and beat No. 6 West Linn 2-1 Saturday in another quarterfinal match. The Scots will bring a four-game winning streak and a 13-2-2 record into Tuesday’s match at Summit.
