April 8, 1947 – October 19, 2018
On October 19, 2018, Gary Reynolds, age 71, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by family.
Gary was born April 8, 1947, the first child of Herb and Helen Reynolds in Kellogg, Idaho. In 1955, the Reynolds family moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, where he spent most of his childhood. There he learned to ski and kayak and gained his love of the outdoors. He attended Sonoma State where, in 1969, he met the love of his life, Terry Hochstetter. Gary and Terry wed in 1971, and settled in Gresham, Oregon, where Gary worked as a professional land surveyor for PGE for many years and raised their two sons, Nathan and Elliot Reynolds.
In 2007, Gary retired and moved with his wife to Bend, Oregon, where he could be found biking, skiing, hiking, kayaking, and recruiting many others to do the same. To see Gary in nature was to see him at his best and at peace. He had an especially graceful form in Nordic and downhill and his skiing partners called watching him beauty in motion. Gary was known locally for his participation in the Pole Pedal Paddle, in which he competed to eight mug-worthy finishes in the men’s individuals. Gary volunteered in Bend as an active member of Deschutes County Search and Rescue for five years during which he was instrumental in founding SAR’s mountain bike team. Gary also helped to craft and maintain local mountain-biking trails for fellow outdoors enthusiasts through Central Oregon Trail Alliance. He offered his skills as a guide for the blind to share in the outdoor activities he loved.
Gary is remembered as a loyal, warm-hearted friend and family man who could always be counted on to lend a helping hand.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Terry Reynolds, two sons Nathan and Elliot, and siblings, Andy, Barbara, and Richard, as well as many friends. Gary will be remembered with a service in Bend at Niswonger- Reynolds Funeral Home Sunday, October 21, at 1:00 p.m., followed by burial at Deschutes Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gary’s name to Temple Beth Tikvah at bethtikvahbend.org.
