REDMOND — Daniel Underwood set the tone, pinning Joe Martin in 25 seconds, as La Pine rolled past Ridgeview 46-27 Wednesday night in a nonleague wrestling dual on the Ravens’ home mat.

“I like to come out of the whistle hard and aggressive,” said Underwood, who opened the dual at 220 pounds. “I like my matches to end quicker. If I can get a pin and get six points for the team, I always like to do that.

“It’s really important when you’re the first match because you’re the energy for the team the rest of the dual, so if you come out there and get a good match in, it’s a really big boost for your team.”

After another quick pin by Carmello Farfaglia at 106 pounds and four Ridgeview forfeits at 285, 113, 120 and 126, La Pine opened with a 36-0 lead.

“Those are two tough kids we have in the lineup,” La Pine coach Aaron Flack said of Underwood and Farfaglia. “That was a great start for us.”

Danny Cornejo (132) scored the Ravens’ first points of the evening, pinning Adrian Boysha in the first period.

La Pine’s Ricky Gallamore won the first match to go past the first round, on a 12-1 major decision.One of the most competitive matches came at 145 pounds, where Ridgeview freshman Daniel Jaramillo edged David Pacheco 8-5 after each wrestler had a near fall in the second period.

“He looked really good for a freshman,” Ridgeview coach Dan Elliott said of Jaramillo. “He did a good job.”

After La Pine’s Syrus Smith won by fall at 160 pounds, Tony Lochner of Ridgeview answered with a pin at 170.

The Ravens also won the final match of the dual as sophomore Cole Jackson pinned Trentyn Tennant in the third period.

“That’s a pretty big deal,” Elliott said. “That kid (Tennant) was fifth at state last year, so that’s a big win.”

Tennant moved up a weight class against Ridgeview after winning the 171-pound championship at the Central Oregon Officials Association Invitation at Bend High last weekend.

“He needs a match like that to see where he’s at and what he needs to work on,” Flack said of Tennant. “When he wrestles a big, strong kid like that he’s got to be able to stay in position. He got out of position a number of times in that match. I wanted to see what kind of gas tank he has and now we know.”

Elliott was pleased with how Ridgeview finished the dual.

“I thought we did a good job competing in most cases,” he said. “We just have too many forfeits to make up. It was a chance for our younger kids to grow and get some confidence. We’ve got one senior and one junior in the lineup but really good-quality younger kids.”

Ridgeview sophomore Ethyne Reid (152) missed the dual with a broken hand.

The Hawks and Ravens will compete in the Culver Invitational on Saturday beginning at 2:15 p.m.

“I think once we get our guys in shape, we’ll have a pretty solid lineup and be able to compete with just about anybody at our level,” Flack said.
