Warm Springs will receive $447,000 from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to repair its water system and ensure 4,000 residents maintain access to drinkable water.
The community’s water system has three finishing pumps, two of which no longer work. The third appears likely to fail soon, and losing all three would mean thousands of Warm Springs, Wasco and Paiute people living on the reservation northeast of Madras would have no access to potable water or water needed to extinguish fires.

Repairing the two broken finishing pumps is expected to cost about $850,000. Along with the HUD grant announced Wednesday, Warm Springs will receive $423,000 from the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Indian Health Service.
