Fred Meyer and union warehouse workers based in Puyallup, Washington, reached a tentative agreement to avert a strike that could have affected stores across the Northwest.
Teamsters Local 117, which represents the warehouse workers, said Friday the agreement on a four-year contract has the full recommendation of its bargaining committee. The union did not describe the terms of the agreement but said members were set to vote on the contract this week.
Warehouse workers in July unanimously voted to authorize a strike after the grocery chain refused to meet demands for better pay and new safety standards. Workers said they had been required to work overtime to meet record demand for groceries during the pandemic, and that measures intended to stop the spread of the coronavirus in the warehouse had been ineffective in stopping outbreaks.
The strike could have disrupted distribution to 60 Fred Meyer and 59 QFC stores across Washington and Alaska, as well as a handful of Oregon stores and natural foods sections throughout the region.
