A rollover crash involving a Cascades East Transit Bus and two teenagers closed Century Drive in southwest Bend Saturday afternoon just west of Skyline Ranch Road at milepost 5.
A resident who lives nearby told The Bulletin that the CET bus was headed down from Mt. Bachelor ski areas around 12:30 p.m. when a silver Toyota 4Runner swerved into its path. Oregon State Police Capt. Kyle Kennedy confirmed that information and added that the 4Runner was operated by two teenagers.
Both teenagers were taken to an unidentified hospital in “critical” condition, Kennedy said. One of the 16 passengers aboard the CET bus was also transported for evaluation.
A driver at the scene, John Naitove, also told The Bulletin that bystanders were speaking to someone within the Toyota before emergency services arrived. As Naitove headed back into town, he saw approximately 12 police cars and one firetruck headed to the scene.
First responders arrived at 12:45 p.m.
The crash diverted traffic along the highway Highway 372 for several hours on a particularly busy weekend for Mt. Bachelor. In the last few days, the ski area has seen several additional inches of snow and expects more in the coming week.
Although it isn’t known if this accident occurred because of road conditions, first-hand accounts from drivers on the road today suggest Century Boulevard was icy after a light snow Friday night.
