A Central Oregon organization is launching a public campaign to encourage safe gun storage as a way to prevent suicide.
Suicide rates that involve a gun in Central Oregon are above the national average, so Central Oregon Suicide Prevention Alliance will release two public service announcements to encourage safe gun storage, Caroline Suiter, a mental health promotion strategist with Deschutes County, said in a news release Tuesday.

The alliance serves Crook, Deschutes and Jefferson counties in an effort to lower suicide deaths and attempts. The announcements will be available in English and Spanish, and were set to begin airing at the end of April, Suiter said. They were crafted with “input from firearm owners, law enforcement agencies and retailers,” Suiter said.
