Four Millington touchdowns not enough for Ridgeview against South Albany

REDMOND — Despite outscoring South Albany in the second half, Ridgeview football found itself in too deep of a hole and with not enough time left to complete the comeback.

The Redhawks handed the Ravens their first loss of the season with a 48-28 nonleague win Friday evening at Reece Rollins Field.

South Albany (2-0 overall) moved the ball at will against Ridgeview (2-1), picking up three to four yards nearly every play. The Redhawks scored on each of their six possessions in the first half to build a 41-14 lead by halftime.

“Defensively, you have to be disciplined,” said Ridgeview coach Patrick Pileggi. “There were times that we weren’t disciplined at all and didn’t do our jobs. That’s what happens. They pick up three to four yards, next thing you know they are running free down the sideline.”

South Albany deployed a veer-option offense, a throwback system that is rarely seen in this era. It requires defenders to not stray from their assignments or else it opens the door for big plays.

Six times the Redhawks found the end zone in the first half. Sophomore running back Rahim Mohammed scored two rushing touchdowns in the first half of 1 and 4 yards.

Senior quarterback Sawyer Hallberg ran for a 20-yard touchdown and had a passing touchdown to junior running back Cole Angel. On the final play of the first half, senior running back Logan Johnson scored on the ground to give the Redhawks a 27-point advantage at halftime.

The Ravens’ offense had some explosive scoring plays, but they were unable to keep pace with the Redhawks.

Senior quarterback Adam Millington threw four touchdowns against South Albany. His first was a 41-yarder to sophomore wideout Finn Chambers, which gave the Ravens an early 7-6 lead. Millington connected with junior tight end Danner Frost for a 2-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

In the second half, Millington and Chambers connected for a score in which Chambers won a jump ball in the end zone for a 21-yard touchdown. Finally in the fourth quarter, senior wideout Logan Nakamura hauled in a 50-yard bomb.

The loss to South Albany put an end to the Ravens’ two-game winning streak to begin the year. The season is only three weeks old and Ridgeview has already eclipsed last year’s win total.

“We are light-years ahead of where we were last year,” Pileggi said. “There were some bad habits from last year that showed up tonight. We have to flush those out so we don’t make those mistakes anymore.”

The Ravens will be on the road next Friday when they face Corvallis before opening Intermountain Conference play on Oct. 4 against Summit.
