At St. Charles PEDAL Clinic, Central Oregon Pediatric Associates, Mosaic Community Health and Summit Health, we are dedicated to providing comprehensive services for children and youth with special health care needs, including autism. As we observe Autism Awareness Month this April, we recognize the importance of deepening our understanding and acceptance of autism and celebrating the unique qualities of autistic individuals and their families. Autism is characterized by diverse experiences and abilities, with each person interacting uniquely with their environment.

Recent statements made by political leaders have misrepresented autism and disregarded the dignity of autistic individuals and their families. As health care professionals and compassionate community members, we are dedicated to counteracting misinformation with truth and empathy.

We are committed to providing scientific, evidence-based care that honors the individuality of each person, affirming that everyone can lead a fulfilling life as a valued community member.

To those autistic individuals and families, know that you are not alone. We stand with you, committed to fostering a community that values understanding, support and evidence-based care. Silence in the face of misinformation is not an option for us. Our dedication stems from a genuine desire to support the families and individuals we work with daily. We will continue to advocate for a future where autistic individuals are celebrated for their contributions and supported in their endeavors.

Central Oregon is fortunate to have robust autism-specific resources and support systems, thanks to the collaborative efforts of local stakeholders. This ensures that families have access to comprehensive services designed to empower and uplift them. We encourage those seeking more information to reach out to their primary care providers for community resources and guidance.

As we move forward, let us embrace the spirit of Autism Awareness Month by committing to understanding and supporting autistic individuals and their families. We invite everyone to join us in fostering an environment where empathy and evidence guide our actions, ensuring that every person is recognized for their unique contributions and supported in their journey. Together, we can build a future where autism is not misunderstood but celebrated as part of the rich diversity of human experience.

Sondra Marshall, PhD, and Dr. Lisa Herzig, are at St. Charles PEDAL Clinic. Dr. Logan Thomas Clausen is interim CEO and chief medical officer of Central Oregon Pediatric Associates.
