Summit turf

We were disappointed that the Bend-La Pine School Board made the decision to not allow synthetic turf at Summit because it would not be fair to the other schools. Why should fair be the basis of a business decision? Bend boys golf team was able to play in a national tournament on the East Coast paid for by one of the parents. What a great opportunity for this team! But was it fair to the other schools in the district?

Bend, Mountain View and La Pine all have indoor plumbing at their football fields. Summit does not. Is this fair? Bend has a concession stand that was funded by private donations of money and time. Summit uses a trailer. Is this fair? Maybe not, but it was an opportunity for Bend parents and alumni to come together to improve the facilities.

Our point is that the school board should make a business decision based upon what is best for the school that has the need at the time. When another high school needs a major improvement, then the school board should make the best business decision for that school and not be concerned about the fairness for the other schools. If Summit parents and coaches are willing to raise funds to help provide a playing field that can be used for multiple sports and for regional events, then they should be given that opportunity. Maybe it could also generate some much needed revenue for the school district.
