Lawrence ‘Larry’ Mendoza

Lawrence ”Larry” Mendoza of Susanville, Calif., died Sunday at a care facility. He was 81.
The Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. today at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Redmond. The Rev. Leo Weckerle will officiate. Interment will follow at Redmond Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Mendoza was born Nov. 11, 1919, in Niles, Ga. He was raised by his aunt and uncle, Marie and Emanuel Mendoza. After graduating from high school, he attended community college for two years and then became an apprenticed machinist.
He moved to Oregon and was manager at Redmond Machine Shop for several years. In 1969, he moved to Susanville, to work for Coin Mill Works. In 1980, he opened Precision Machine Shop and worked there until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Binnie; two daughters, Judy Ferrari of Redmond and Deborah MacDonald of Susanville; two sons, Denny Ferrari of Redmond and Larry Dean Mendoza; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Redmond Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Shirley Mae Hawken

Shirley Mae Hawken of Silver Lake died Wednesday from a heart attack. She was 67.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Desert Rose Funeral Chapel in Lakeview. The committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Silver Lake Cemetery, followed by the memorial service held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses at Antler Road Hall in La Pine with Kurt Hamberg officiating.
Mrs. Hawken was born Feb. 11, 1933, in Los Angeles, to Milford and Mildred Gann Beller. She lived in the San Joaquin Valley until 1942, when she moved to Sonora, where she received her education, graduating in 1950.
She married Art Hawken on Feb. 1, 1950, in Sparks, Nev.
They lived in the Monterey Bay area until 1990, when they moved to Jacksonville, Ill., and then to Oregon in 1997. They settled at Silver Lake in 1999.
Mrs. Hawken was a member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses.
She enjoyed arranging flowers.
Survivors include her husband, Art of Silver Lake; one daughter, Lisa Hawken of La Pine; one son, Leonard of Jacksonville; one sister, Barbara Green of Modesto, Calif.; one stepson, Shawn Miner of Carpenteria, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Louetta M. Galbraith

Louetta M. Galbraith of Madras died Thursday at East Cascade Assisted Living Center. She was 95.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday at Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Madras United Methodist Church. Final disposition will be at Mount Jefferson Memorial Park.
Mrs. Galbraith was born Oct. 3, 1905, in Madras, to Irvin and Myrtle (Mason) Shutt. She graduated from Madras High School in 1923, and shortly thereafter earned a teaching certificate.
She taught school at Hay Creek, but continued her education at Willamette University.
She married her husband, Gordon, in 1932.
They lived in Arizona and California before returning to her family homestead in 1947.
Mrs. Galbraith was the assistant postmaster in Madras for 18 years.
She was active in many organizations, including the Mountain View Hospital Auxiliary, the American Cancer Society and the American Red Cross blood drive. She was also an active member of Madras United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Galbraith was named Jefferson County Pioneer Queen in 1990.
Survivors include two sons, Gordon ”Bud” of Salem and Gerry of Sutherlin; two daughters, Bev Iseri of Ontario and Sally of Lebanon; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made to United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Society or the charity of one’s choice.

Buelah B. (Effenbeck) Edwards

Buelah B. (Effenbeck) Edwards of Bend died Wednesday of natural causes. She was 88.
A celebration of life will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. next Sunday at 60436 Woodside Loop in Bend.
Mrs. Edwards was born Nov. 29, 1912, in San Francisco.
She married Eddie Edwards on July 28, 1933, in Salinas, Calif.
They lived in the Bay area until 1953 then moved to Salinas, where they resided prior to moving to Bend in 1991.
Mrs. Edwards worked as a retail grocery clerk and retired in 1975.
She enjoyed playing golf and traveling.
Survivors include two sons, Stan of Bend and Norm of Chicago; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
