Flora M. (Caughey) Basim

Sept. 19, 1917 July 19, 2001

Flora M. (Caughey) Basim of Sisters died Thursday. She was 83.

A private service will be held.

Mrs. Basim was born Sept. 19, 1917, in Redmond, to W.L. and Edna (Ingham) Caughey. She married Melvin Basim in 1940 in Bend.

She worked as a secretary for the Oregon State Welfare Department.

She then worked as a bookkeeper for MastersonSt. Clair Hardware Store until she retired in 1996.

Mrs. Basim was affiliated with the Military Order of Cooties. She enjoyed gardening and needlework.

Survivors include her sister, Bernadette Barrel of Salem.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother and two sisters.

Kenneth Eugene Newburn

Kenneth Eugene Newburn of Prineville died Wednesday of natural causes. He was 75.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Ochoco Creek Park Amphitheater.

Mr. Newburn was born March 31, 1926, in Wilbur, Neb., to Orva ”Doc” and Helen (Svoboda) Newburn.

He served in the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1946.

He married Ellen on May 24, 1946, in Portland.

He moved to Prineville from Bend in 1977.

Mr. Newburn worked for Pacific Northwest Bell and then for Pacific Power and Light. He retired in 1988.

He was a member of the Mansons, Shriners, Scottish Rite, York Rite, Order of the Eastern Star, Veterans of Foreign Wars, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, #125 Electrical Union in Portland and Elks Lodge.

Mr. Newburn enjoyed playing with the Jefferson County Community Band, the Tom Shaver Band and at The Soroptimists Senior Center. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of Prineville; two sons, Keith of Bend and Robin of Kuna, Idaho; two daughters, Catherine Thompson of Prineville and Sandra Ferland of Clackamas; one brother, Donald of Lebanon; and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Constance ‘Connie’ Ilene (Baird) Lewis

Constance ”Connie” Ilene (Baird) Lewis of Prineville died Thursday of natural causes. She was 82.

A private memorial service will be held.

Mrs. Lewis was born Aug. 3, 1918, in Elkton, to Charles and Verna (Meeker) Baird. She married Jack Lewis.

She worked for Moore Dry Dock Company in Oakland, Calif., during World War II.

She was a ranch hand for Stearns Cattle Company in Prineville and Jack Gray Ranch in Sliver Lake.

Mrs. Lewis enjoyed horses, gambling, watching sports and spending time with her friends.

Survivors include her special friend, Bill Craig of Prineville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and two brothers.

James Albert Young

March 4, 1937 July 18, 2001

James Albert Young of Prineville died Wednesday of natural causes. He was 64.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Veteran’s Club in Prineville.

Mr. Young was born March 4, 1937, in Prineville, to Earl and Irene (Bryant) Young. He married Pat on Nov. 11, 1962, in Winnemucca, Nev.

He worked for Ochoco Feed and Farm Supply. He then worked for Miller Lumber Company and retired in January 2001.

He enjoyed fishing, collecting arrow heads and guns, gardening, listening to country music and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of Prineville; one son, Kenneth of Prineville; three daughters, Pamela Smith of Bend, Michelle of Elkton and Heidi Black of Redmond; one brother, Thomas of Prineville; five sisters, Ruth Johnson, Wilda Dorman, Wilma Warren, Clara Green and Juanita McDonald, all of Prineville; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister and one grandson.

Robert Augustine Banks

May 27, 1940 July 18, 2001

Robert Augustine Banks of Bend died Wednesday of natural causes. He was 61.

No services will be held.

Mr. Banks was born May 27, 1940, in Hanford, Calif.

He graduated from the College of Sequoia. He worked doing general maintenance.

Mr. Banks moved to Bend in 1970.

He enjoyed stamp and coin collecting, antique cars, and the 49ers football team.

Survivors include his three sons, Allen and Bob, both of Bend and Tim of Portland; mother, Rose of Vacaville, Calif.; one brother, Richard of Vacaville, Calif.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
