On May 11, teen-agers Lacey Barnhouse, Rachel Dunaway and Lindsay Jones were in a Buick Skylark stopped on Main Street in Prineville anticipating a night of singing at a Mother’s Day dinner when they were rear-ended by a Ford Bronco, killing Barnhouse.

On Friday, a Crook County grand jury indicted the driver of the Ford, Kelle Elizabeth Gerard, 20, of Prineville, on charges of manslaughter, assault and driving under the influence of marijuana.

Gerard was stoned when she hit the Skylark at 50 mph at about 6 p.m., according to the indictment.

She also had her 14-month-old son in the Bronco with her.

The Bronco ended up partially on top of the Skylark, destroying the car, Dunaway, 16, said from her home Friday.

Despite being buckled up in the back seat of the Skylark, Barnhouse, 16, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Dunaway was flown by Air Life helicopter to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend where she was listed in critical condition for head injuries.

Dunaway said she was unconscious for eight days after she was hit and spent 25 days in the hospital, missing the rest of the school year.

Doctors won’t know if she will make a full recovery until a year passes, Dunaway said, noting her balance is off and it is hard to concentrate.

Jones, who was also in the back of the Skylark, was treated and released at Pioneer Memorial Hospital in Prineville the night of the accident.

Gerard was also treated and released at Pioneer Memorial.

Her infant son was not injured in the crash.

Gerard was arrested on Friday morning and lodged at the Crook County Jail on $50,000 bail.

She was arraigned the same day on charges of second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault, third-degree assault, fourth-degree assault and driving under the influence of marijuana.

Gerard is scheduled for a release hearing in Crook County Circuit Court on Aug. 28.

Barnhouse’s death has been ”rough on everybody,” Dunaway said. ”Lacey and her mom were really close so it has been very hard for her.”
