Emmert ‘Ed’ Edward Ludeman

Emmert ”Ed” Edward Ludeman of Sisters died Friday of complications following surgery in Bend. He was 79.

A Masonic service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Redmond Masonic Lodge. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:15 a.m. Thursday at the Community Presbyterian Church in Redmond.

Mr. Ludeman was born July 2, 1922, in Neehah, Wis., to Karl and Valborg Ludeman. He married Shirley Prothero on June 3, 1945, in Waukesha, Wis.

He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Enterprise.

During World War II he was a torpedo pilot on the USS Savo Island in the Battle of the Coral Sea and Battle for the Philippine Islands. After World War II he served on the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Mr. Ludeman was the commander of the Naval Air Facility in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica from 1957-1958. He retired in 1961 as a Lieutenant Commander.

He graduated from Stout State University in 1965 and received his BS in Industrial and Vocational Education. He co-authored a 17 volume study of the American industry.

Mr. Ludeman was recalled to active duty as Security Officer for Pt. Mugu Pacific Missile Range in California in 1968. He then retired in 1970.

He worked as a Center Director for the Job Corps program in coordination with the U.S. Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife and RCA. He was in Who’s Who of American Business Leaders of America in 1991 and 1992. He retired as Vice President, Western Region from Management and Training Corporation in Ogden, Utah in 1991.

He was affiliated with the Community Presbyterian Church in Redmond and served as an Elder. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, DeMolay, York Rite, Royal Order of Jesters, Scottish Rite, a dad advisor for the Rainbow Girls, associate guardian for Jobs Daughters, past Master of Redmond Masonic Lodge No. 154, past Patron of The Order of the Eastern Star and past Potentate of Hillah Shrine Temple. He was a member of the Oregon Board of Directors for the Scottish Rite Clinics for Childhood Language Disorders and was elected 32nd KCCH Scottish Rite in October of 2000.

Survivors include his wife of Sisters; one son, Michael of Bend; one daughter, Anne Walker of Houston; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother.

Arnold John Grater

Arnold John Grater of Madras died Sunday of natural causes at Mt. View Hospital. He was 50.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Bel-Air Colonial Chapel in Madras.

Mr. Grater was born Dec. 25, 1950, in Oregon City to W. Harold and Myrthena (Martin) Grater. He went to school in Madras and graduated from Madras High School in 1969. He also graduated from Portland Community College in the culinary assistant training program in March of 1972.

He worked as a dispatcher and helper to the Jefferson County Rural Fire Protection District. He also drove vehicles for Phillip Farrel’s river rafting crew.

Survivors include his mother of Madras; and one sister, Dorothy Fromong of Madras.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Arthur Joseph Bishop

Oct. 19, 1919 Nov. 10, 2001

Arthur Joseph Bishop of Redmond died Saturday of natural causes. He was 82.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Beaverton Four Square Church.

Mr. Bishop was born Oct. 19, 1919, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. He married Patricia Jean on March 7, 1944, in England.

He served in the Canadian Army during World War II. He landed on Juno Beach in Normandy, France on D-Day.

Mr. Bishop worked as a building inspector. He and his family moved to Redmond in April of 2001.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping and painting outdoor scenes in oils.

Survivors include his wife of Redmond; six sons, Michael of St. Paul, Minn., James of Aloha, Andrew of Hillsboro, David of Salem, Matthew of Portland and Timothy of Tualatin; four daughters, Sharon Moffett of Buffalo, Minn., Therese Allender of Bend, Anne Marie Piper of Pasco, Wash., and Lenore Hopkins of Baltimore; one brother, James of Canada; three sisters, Elizabeth, Rosaire and Blanche, all of Canada; and 26 grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Hospice of Redmond, Sisters and Grant County, 2265 W. Highland Ave., Redmond 97756.

Roseanne S. (Schenck) Howdyshell

Roseanne S. (Schenck) Howdyshell of Bend died Monday of cancer. She was 58.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Deschutes Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.

Ms. Howdyshell was born June 16, 1943, in Toledo. She graduated from Real Estate School.

She worked as a partner and owner of Cascade Credit Consulting Inc. She moved to Bend in 1985.

Ms. Howdyshell volunteered as a 4-H leader in Pendleton. She enjoyed cross stitching, hunting, water skiing and snowmobiling.

Survivors include her son, Chris of Bend; one daughter, Jennifer Boise of Bend; and one brother, John Schenck of Eugene.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Charlotte Maxine ‘Max’ (Sayler) Smith

Charlotte Maxine ”Max” (Sayler) Smith of Bend died Monday at the Agape Foster Care Facility in Bend. She was 87.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 8 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bend with Steve Wilbourn officiating.

Mrs. Smith was born Sept. 17, 1914, in Prescott, Wash., to Charles and Lillie (Hancock) Sayler. She and her family moved to to Bend in 1919. She graduated from Bend Senior High School in 1932. She married Stacy Smith on Sept. 20, 1935, in Bend.

She worked as a bookkeeper for the family business, Central Oregon Distributors.

Mrs. Smith was affiliated with the Trinity Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Bend Golf and County Club. She enjoyed traveling, reading and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her two daughters, Carol Hatch of Bend and Peggy Schulzke of Hillsboro; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

Aletha Krauth

Aletha Krauth of Powell Butte died Friday of natural causes. She was 79.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Prineville Funeral Home.

Mrs. Krauth was born March 16, 1922, in Lake Placid, N.Y.

She worked as a postal clerk. She moved to Powell Butte in 1979.

Mrs. Krauth was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Bend. She enjoyed camping, traveling, music, going to Kah-Nee-Ta, reading and animals.

Survivors include her two sons, Steve Ledak of Santee, Calif., and Kevin Carl of Powell Butte; three daughters, Gloria Merton and Peggy Jones, both of Saratoga, N.Y., and Carolyn Ledak of Powell Butte; one sister, Myrtle Newkirk of New York City; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and two sisters.

Eugene Turner

Eugene Turner of Madras died Thursday of natural causes at his home. He was 78.

A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park.

Mr. Turner was born July 12, 1923, in Glendale, Ariz., to Earnest and Bessie (Hiatt) Turner. He married Iona on Jan. 24, 1943, in Arizona.

He worked as a diesel mechanic before retiring.

Mr. Turner enjoyed spending time with his family and reading western books.

Survivors include his wife of Madras; one son, Steven of Metolius; four daughters, Sandra Fabbrini of Madras, Gloria Wooldridge of Prineville, Linda Turnball of Siskiyou County, Calif., and Tammy Hollowell of Bend; one brother, Paul of Bakersfield, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother.

Eudora K. (Hull) Rodriguez

Eudora K. (Hull) Rodriguez of Madras died Saturday of natural causes at Mt. View Hospital. She was 62.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Madras Conservative Baptist Church with Pastor Jeff Freshour officiating.

Ms. Rodriguez was born Jan. 13, 1939, in Greeley, Colo., to Leo and Mabel (Johnson) Hull.

She was a homemaker. She also owned and operated a tavern in Sisseton, S.D.

She moved to Madras nine years ago.

Ms. Rodriguez enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, reading, cats, gardening and roses.

Survivors include her companion, Tony of Madras; two sons, LeRoy Johnson of Maui, Hawaii and David Johnson of Lynnwood, Wash.; two daughters, Vickey of Madras and Cindy Hieb of Edmond, Okla.; one brother, Leo Hull of Sisseton, S.D.; two sisters, Ellen Clark of Roslyn, S.D., and Jodell Machner of Sisseton, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
