Bull and Boogie returns to Expo

For those who want to put a little bull in their boogie on New Year’s Eve, there is the New Year’s Eve Bull and Boogie at the Deschutes County Expo Center in Redmond.
The bull riding starts at 8 p.m., and features many local cowboys, including Joe Oakes of Terrebonne, Jimmy Floyd of Powell Butte, Haydn Reece of Prineville and Mike Romine of Redmond.
Shawn Waite, a former champion of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Columbia River Circuit, also will compete. Waite graduated from Redmond High School and now lives in Idaho. Other circuit champions include Kyle Joslin, J.C. Bean and Tom Clark.
In all, 35 bull riders will compete, with the top eight facing off in a final round.
This will be the third New Year’s Eve Bull and Boogie, and, according to event coordinator Buster Bain, its popularity has increased annually.
”We get a better crowd every year,” said Bain. ”People must like what they see, because they keep coming back and bringing more.”
So where does the ”Boogie” come in?
The Expo Center is set up so that about half of the space is devoted to the bull riding arena, and the other half is used for a beer garden and a dance floor.
”It goes right into a dance after the last bull rider,” Bain said.
Despite the beer garden, Bain is quick to point out that people of all ages are welcome.
”It’s a family event,” he says. ”Many people want to spend New Year’s Eve with their kids, so any ages are welcome.
”And the clown keeps the jokes clean.”
The clown Bain refers to is PRCA National Finals Rodeo Clown and Barrelman Donni Landus.
”He has real good acts,” said Bain.
Professional rodeo announcers Kedo Olson and Scott Allen will also be there, as will many quality bulls.
NFR and PBR Finals bulls on hand will be Downtown, Copenhagen Playmate, Dirty Dancer, Lightning Strike, Copenhagen YoYo, Bell Dinger and Tinkerbell.
Not to mention 2001 NPRA Bull of the Year Sugarbear, and 2000 NPRA Bull of the Finals, Texas Red.
Advance tickets can be purchased at a price of $18 for adults, and $12 for children 12 and under.
Tickets at the door are $20 for adults and $14 for children, but seating will be limited.
Ticket outlets include Leavitts Western Wear in Sisters, Sun Home Video in Redmond and Prineville, Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond, Aherns Market in Madras, and Corral West Ranchwear in Bend.
