LaVerne (Gove) Hanshew

Feb. 6, 1911 Jan. 19, 2002

LaVerne (Gove) Hanshew of Bend died Jan. 19 of natural causes. She was 90.

A funeral will be held at 4 p.m. today at Niswonger, Reynolds and Tabor Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hanshew was born Feb. 6, 1911, in Bellfountain. She married Rex Hanshew in September 1930, in Corvallis.

She was a homemaker. She also ran a flea market for the grange.

Mrs. Hanshew was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a camera club and book club. She was the past master of the Pine Forest Grange and Pomona Grange. She was the Deschutes Pioneer Queen in 1996. She enjoyed gardening, collecting bells and dolls, canning, rock hounding, tumbling and polishing rocks, making jewelry, crocheting, knitting and making quilts.

Survivors include her son, Robert of Bend; four daughters, Marilyn Sigmund of Klamath Falls, Carol Julian and Laura Witmeyer, both of Prineville and Kay Olsen of Sunlakes, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter.

Harry William Brainard

Aug. 8, 1922 Jan. 23, 2002

Harry William Brainard of Bend died Wednesday of natural causes. He was 79.

A private service will be held.

Mr. Brainard was born Aug. 8, 1922, in Los Angeles to Harry and Therese (Thaten) Brainard. He graduated from University of Southern California with a degree in music. He married Virginia Watson on April 30, 1949, in Los Angeles.

He served as a gun captain and ship’s band leader on the U.S.S. New York battleship in the U.S. Navy. He was honorably discharge in 1946.

Mr. Brainard toured with his military band and played the trombone. He then worked for an insurance company while attending law school. He started his private law practice in Los Angeles in 1960. As a lawyer he was a Pro-Tem Judge and president of the San Fernando Criminal Bar. He then worked at the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office. He retired in 1994. He moved to Bend in 1995.

He enjoyed music, playing golf, old movies and reading. He also enjoyed major league baseball and was a season ticket holder at Dodger Stadium for many years.

Survivors include his wife of Bend; two sons, Gary and Mark, both of Los Angeles; a daughter, Nancy Brainard-Rogers of Bend; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

Ernest Darst

June 14, 1910 Jan. 23, 2002

Ernest Darst of Bend died Wednesday of natural causes. He was 91.

A celebration of life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at 1315 NW Hartford in Bend.

Mr. Darst was born June 14, 1910, in Spokane, Wash. He married Lucille Jennings on Dec. 12, 1931, in Warrenton.

He owned and operated Darst Logging Company, working with Brooks Scanlon, Weyerhaeuser and the U.S. Forest Service throughout central and southeastern Oregon. He moved to Bend in 1946. He then moved his business to New Mexico in 1968 and worked with Duke City Lumber and the U.S. Forest Service.

Mr. Darst was a member of the Eagles Lodge. He volunteered with the Explorer Scouts. He was instrumental in working with artist Georgia O’Keefe in establishing a youth community center in Abiquiu, N.M. He enjoyed building birdhouses and sharing logging stories with his friends.

Survivors include his wife of Bend; a daughter, Joanee Ulrich of Bend; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son.

Barbara Joan (Sutton) Morgans

Oct. 10, 1935 Jan. 25, 2002

Barbara Joan (Sutton) Morgans of Bend died Friday of cancer at her daughter’s home in Bend. She was 66.

A private service will be held.

Ms. Morgans was born Oct. 10, 1935, in New York City to Robert and Margarita (Bou) Sutton. She attended El Camino College in Souther California. She moved to Portland in 1970, where she received her master’s degree from Portland State.

She was the past president of the Oregon Nurses Association. She moved to Newport and was assistant administrator and director of nurses at Pacific Community Hospital. She then worked as a claims auditor for Hospital Management in Portland. She moved to Bend in September 2001 to be near family.

Ms. Morgans enjoyed traveling, her Cavalier King Spaniel dogs and fishing.

Survivors include her three sons, Robert Turton and William Turton, both of Portland and Richard Turton of Medford; a daughter, Catherine Aschoff of Bend; a brother, Al Schriver of Apple Valley, Calif.; a sister, Susan Schriver of Boise, Idaho; and seven grandchildren.

Lawrence LeRoy Gallagher Jr.

Dec. 21, 1934 Jan. 22, 2002

Lawrence LeRoy Gallagher Jr. of Crooked River Ranch died Tuesday of natural causes. He was 67.

A celebration of life will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. March 17 at the Redmond Elks Lodge.

Mr. Gallagher was born Dec. 21, 1934, in Chicago. He married LaVerda on March 31, 1984, in San Francisco.

He served in the Army.

Mr. Gallagher worked as a switchman for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He was a past board member of the Oregon Metro Federal Credit Union. He also worked as a meat cutter, printer, pizza cook and at Portland Memorial Coliseum. He moved to Crooked River Ranch in 1984. He worked at the Terrebonne Hardware Store.

He was a member of the Crooked River Lion’s Club and Redmond Elks Lodge. He enjoyed playing Santa at many functions in the Central Oregon area. He was the Santa at Meier and Frank in Eugene and for the Sisters and Crooked River Ranch Christmas Parades.

Survivors include his wife of Crooked River Ranch; three sons, Michael and Richard, both of Portland and Bradley of Vancouver, Wash.; two daughters, Laurie Botkin of Roseburg and Cyndi Nerseth of Keizer; a sister, Patricia Stanich of Portland; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Elks Children’s Eye Clinic or Hospice of Redmond, Sisters and Grant County.
