Lava Bears overcome cold, Storm

Bend High had too many contenders in too many events as the Lava Bears defeated Summit 116-28 in an Intermountain Conference track meet Thursday.

On the girls side, Bend won 100-48.
”It was cold out there,” said Summit coach Dave Turnbull. ”It was colder than cold. Our kids showed a lot of promise and potential. We have a whole season ahead of us. Bend is a very solid team. We want to keep working and try to get to where they’re at.”
Bend’s Mike Hill won the boys shot put event with a throw of 48 feet, inch, and he was fourth in the discus. John Hinman won the 1,500 for Bend in 4 minutes, 20.5 seconds, while teammate Dane Brock was first in the 800 in 2:09.4.
Summit’s Nathan Crabtree won the long jump with a leap of 18-1.
On the girls side, Bend’s Kari Cox was first in the shot put with a toss of 33-7. Liddy Steele won the 100 for Bend in 12.9 seconds.
Summit’s Emily Laing took the high jump with a leap of 4-10, and Zoe Roy was first in the 1,500 in 5:07 and the 800 in 2:30.2.

”Zoe Roy is showing great potential,” said Summit distance coach Bambi Fraley. ”She’s a very promising athlete and is only a freshman.”

Cougars top relays
Mountain View sophomore Sean Wilcox soared 42 feet to win the boys triple jump Thursday at the Mountain View Cougar Relays.
Mountain View, Gilchrist and Chiloquin competed in the non-scoring event designed as a fun break in the season. Several other teams originally scheduled to take part in the meet canceled due to weather.
”Kids got dressed up in goofy clothes,” said Mountain View boys coach Tate Metcalf. ”It’s great for all the kids to let their guard down and have a fun meet like this.
”This was definitely a low-key, fun meet.”
The Cougars’ Ryan Roque won the boys long jump with a mark of 20 feet. Gilchrist’s Dominic Chapman was first in the boys high jump, clearing 6 feet.
For the girls, Mountain View’s Crissy Cragger won the long jump with a leap of 14-8.
Mountain View won all the relays except the sprint medley won by Gilchrist with teams from each school made up in many in cases with athletes who don’t normally participate in running events.
Yow paces Hawks
EUGENE Shasta Yow won the discus and the javelin to lead the La Pine girls past Marist 89-47 in a Sky-Em League track meet Thursday.
Yow won the shot put with a throw of 34 feet and the discus at 87-1. Also for La Pine, Kari Thissel won the 1,500 in 5 minutes, 43.9 seconds, and Victoria Walters the 400 in 1:11.8.
On the boys side, Marist edged the Hawks 75-70. La Pine’s Ellis Phillips won the shot put (42-10), discus (132-3) and high jump (5-8).
