Robert James Burns
Sept. 15, 1938 – May 28, 2002
Robert James Burns of Christmas Valley died May 28 of a heart attack. He was 63.
A potluck will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. at Veneta Community Park in Veneta.
Mr. Burns was born Sept. 15, 1938, in Grand Rapids, Mich.
He served in the Navy during the Korean War.
Mr. Burns was a logger and a craftsman.
He was affiliated with the American Legion.
Survivors include his companion Lynda Grant of Christmas Valley; a son, Robert of Vernal, Utah; four daughters, Brenda Frisby of Bend, Dani Workman of Lakeville, Minn., Michelle James of San Diego, Calif., and Lostein Kirkpatrick of Elmira, Calif.; his mother, Virginia Burns of Springfield; a brother, Tom of Eugene; two sisters, Marsha Adneg of Veneta and Linda Griffin of Tucson, Ariz.; and 14 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father.

Virgil Lee’ Slaughter
Jan. 21, 1931 – May 31, 2002
Virgil ”Lee” Slaughter of Prineville died Friday. He was 71.
A memorial service will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at his home at 855 NW 12th Street in Prineville.
Mr. Slaughter was born Jan. 21, 1931, in Savannah, Okla., to Mary Jewell Slaughter. He married his first wife Ruby King in 1955. He married Afton McKinney on April 23, 1996, in Winnemucca, Nev.
He served in the Army from 1955 to 1957 in Germany.
Mr. Slaughter worked in the wine vineyards of California in the 1940s. He moved to Prineville in 1952 and worked for Consolidated Pine Lumber Mill for 41 years. He retired in 1993.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the coast, casinos, working on cars, animals and spending time with friends and family.
Survivors include his wife of Prineville; two sons, Albert of Prineville and Wayne of Redmond; two daughters, Ann McKenzie of Madras and Debra Ivie of Redmond; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Bessie Wilhelmina (Bloomfield) Castator
May 8, 1915 – June 1, 2002
Bessie Wilhelmina (Bloomfield) Castator of Ligonier, Ind., died Saturday. She was 87.
A viewing will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Orr Funeral Home. Services will follow immediately.
Mrs. Castator was born May 8, 1915, in Kendallville, Ind., to Emil and Caroline Bloomfield. She married Basil Castator on Dec. 12, 1936, in West Fairfield, Ind.
She and her husband owned Shady Rest Campground in Redmond for several years.
Survivors include her three daughters, Sharon Elkins of Orville, Wash., Mary Conrad of Ligonier, Ind., and Debra Eshem of Chester, Va.; a brother, Robert Bloomfield of Golden Valley, Calif.; a sister Catherine Wilson of Butler, Ind.; seven grandchildren; four step grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and seven step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, her parents and four brothers.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
William Bill’ Joseph Culpepper
June 7, 1926 – May 31, 2002
William ”Bill” Joseph Culpepper of Prineville died Friday of natural causes. He was 75.
A viewing will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints in Prineville. A funeral service will follow immediately.
Mr. Culpepper was born June 7, 1926, in Eminence, Mo., to Lewis and Nellie Alpha (Hurt) Culpepper. He married Donna Jean on Oct. 27, 1946, in Prineville.
He served in the Navy during World War II as a Carpenter’s Mate.
Mr. Culpepper worked as a butcher, cabinet maker and shoe salesman at J.C. Pennys. He also worked on the construction of Erikson’s Grocery Store in Prineville and was a diesel mechanic with Hudspeth Pine. He moved to The Dalles in 1957 and worked for Empire and Stone Machinery and Halton Tractor as a mechanic and service manager. He retired in 1989.
He was affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints.
Mr. Culpepper enjoyed playing sports, ballroom dancing, skiing, the mountains, hunting, fishing and camping.
Survivors include his wife of Prineville; three sons, Jerry of Prineville, Jim of Boise, Idaho, and John of Canby; two daughters JoAnne Haugen of Dallas and Jan Williams of Hood River; three sisters, Nadine Bartlett and Flossie Dill, both of Prineville, and Mildred Dill of Mattaw, Wash.; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Lily Bernice (Donovan) Newman
April 11, 1911 – May 26, 2002
Lilly Bernice (Donovan) Newman of Marysville, Wash., died May 26 of pneumonia. She was 91.
A private service will be held.
Mrs. Newman was born April 11, 1911, in Cheney, Wash. She married Riley Newman on May 7, 1929, in Vancouver, Wash.
She was a homemaker. She also worked in several restaurants in Bend and at Sanders Flower Shop.
Survivors include a granddaughter.

Margilee Ann Thomas
Nov. 7, 1936 – May 28, 2002
Margilee Ann Thomas of Marysville, Wash., died May 28 of cancer. She was 65.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on June 15 in Renton, Wash.
Ms. Thomas was born Nov. 7, 1936, in Bend. She graduated from Bend Senior High School in 1955.
She was a receptionist and retired May 1, 2002.
Ms. Thomas was affiliated with Delta Theta Chi, Puget Sound Square Dance, Contra Dance Club and an honorary member of City of Regina Saskatchewan Pipe Band.
Survivors include her three sons, Tom Simpson of Newport, Andy Garboden of Portland and Ted Garboden of Snohomish, Wash.; a daughter, Paula Newman Karrenberg of Arlington, Wash.; her mother, Evelyn Graham; a brother, Paul Graham of Sherwood; two sisters, Kathy Bircher of Bend and Mary Winter of Independence; and 12 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, her father, step-father and a sister.
