Robert Bob’ Nevan Blaine Starkel, Sr.

May 25, 1924 – July 12, 2002

Robert ”Bob” Nevan Blaine Starkel, Sr. of Madras died Friday following a long illness. He was 78.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Starkel was born May 25, 1924, in Ashford, Wash., to Ted and Margaret (McCullough). He married Mary Bidner on June 17, 1947, in Mapleton.

He was a Corporal in the Army from 1944-1946, serving in the Pacific as a medic.

Mr. Starkel worked in logging and construction, the Round Butte Dam Project brought him to Madras in 1960. Other projects include Kah-Nee-Tah and Sunriver. He retired from Warm Springs Forest Products in 1986.

He enjoyed fishing, woodcarving and building homes.

Survivors include his wife of Madras; three sons, Robert Jr., Larry and Terry all of Madras; one daughter, LaShell Schmid of Eugene; two brothers, William and Lane both of Washington; three sisters, Katherine, Jessie Nell and Sue all of Washington; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Madras Hospice.

Eldon Bert Davis

April 17, 1933 – July 14, 2002

Eldon Bert Davis of Sisters died Sunday of cancer. He was 69.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. July 27 at the Faith Lutheran Church of Albany. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.

Mr. Davis was born April 17, 1933, in Molalla. He attended Pacific Lutheran College and completed graduate studies in business management at the University of California at Los Angeles. He married Carole.

He served in the Army.

Mr. Davis had a 35-year career with the U.S. Postal Service. He was a field supervisor and in 1982 he was acting postmaster in Bend. He was assistant postmaster in Salem when he retired in 1989. Mr. Davis was a member and officer of the National Association of Postal Service Employees and received awards for his work.

He was affiliated with the American Legion, the Elks, the Sisters Rodeo Association, Crossroads Property Owners Association, the Sisters Reride Association and Habitat for Humanity. He was a volunteer fireman and captain in Albany, a youth mentor and a SMART reader.

Mr. Davis enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, shooting, canoeing, cowboy poetry, western music, rodeos and his black hat.

Survivors include his wife of Sisters, five sons, Keith of Shoshone, Idaho; Kevin of Maple Valley, Wash.; Kelly of Salem; Kerry of Phoenix; and Kyle of Moses Lake, Wash.; three stepsons, Dan Clark of Bend, Rick and Darrell of Milwaukee; one daughter, Karna of Salem; his mother, Ruth of Salem; two sisters, Betty of Salem and Melba of Albany; and 18 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and a stepson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Redmond, Sisters and Grant County or to the Sisters Organization for Activities and Recreation.

Lucille (Brown) Meeks

June 28, 1915 – July 9, 2002

Lucille (Brown) Meeks of Eugene died July 9 of natural causes. She was 87.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 10 at Deschutes Memorial Chapel. Cory Meeks will officiate.

Mrs. Meeks was born June 28, 1915, in Culver. She graduated from Culver High School. She married Herb Meeks on June 22, 1932, in Culver.

She was a homemaker, and she worked at the Redmond Spokesman.

Mrs. Meeks lived in Redmond from 1950-1986, moved to Yelm, Wash., for two years and then to Eugene in 1988.

She was affiliated with Beta Sigma Phi.

Mrs. Meeks enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and playing cards.

Survivors include her son Jay of Eugene; one brother, Donald Brown of Redmond; three sisters, Margy Darby of Redmond, Mildred McClay of Redmond and Gwen Stabile of Salem, N.H.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son and two daughters.

Rev. Donald Ray Nicholson Sr.

Oct. 14, 1928 – July 15, 2002

Rev. Donald Ray Nicholson Sr. of Redmond died Monday of natural causes. He was 73.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at City Center Foursquare Church in Redmond.

Rev. Nicholson was born Oct. 14, 1928, in Cromwell, Texas, to Alton and Ledelle (Shannon) Nicholson. He married Sharon Wright on Sept. 5, 1949, in Odessa, Texas.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

Rev. Nicholson graduated from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. He earned his master’s in Divinity at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary in Mill Valley, Calif.

He was a pastor in Hawaii, Coos Bay, where he was superintendent of Missions, Portland and Colton, where he established a Christian School. After serving in the ministry he became a Foursquare missionary, based primarily in the Philippines. After retirement he moved to Redmond in November of 2001.

Rev. Nicholson enjoyed his family and golfing.

Survivors include his wife of Redmond; two sons Donald of Tulsa, Okla., and Dan of Redmond; one daughter, Sheryl of Gresham; one sister, Jan Ellison of Andrews, Texas; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Clara Elsie (Schell) Gannon

Nov. 19, 1918 – July 15, 2002

Clara Elsie (Schell) Gannon of Molalla died Monday of natural causes. She was 83.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. at Redmond Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Gannon was born Nov. 19, 1918, in Wasta, S.D. She married Joseph Gannon on Oct. 15, 1935, in Faith, S.D.

She moved to Redmond in 1944, and opened The Do Drop Inn cafe in March 1959. She retired in 1977. After retirement she did volunteer work, until moving to Molalla.

Survivors include her two sons, Joe of Prineville and Jerry of Portland; two daughters, Irene Hoskinson and Claudia Erickson, both of Molalla; two sisters, Kate Wright of Idaho Falls, Idaho and Louise Iverson of Radio City, S.D.; 14 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and several brothers and sisters.

Redmond Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
