PHILOSOPHY:
Obsidian Middle School provides an atmosphere that is tailored to meet the unique needs of the early adolescent. Instruction focuses on developmentally appropriate curricula, practices, and procedures.
Our student support systems are geared for social growth as well as academic improvement. We look to the future of our students with enthusiasm and feel that we play a positive role in the development of all our students. Middle schools are designed to bridge the gap between elementary and high school. Our programs and activities take into account the unique needs of this group of students between 11 and 14 years old, and have been created to help the young adolescent move successfully through these transitional years.
2002-2003 ACADEMIC FOCUS:
Obsidian will continue to facilitate the transformation of ”basic skills” emphasizing math, reading and writing. Instruction will promote concepts and activities for our technological world. Student organization will be stressed through use of school agenda planners.
Academics include humanities, math, science and health. A reading improvement/instruction program will be available for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who need additional help. We include physical education as part of our students’ daily life as well as exploratory opportunities in art, music, computers, life skills and Spanish. Teachers work in grade level teams to promote a ”school within a school” atmosphere.
PARENT/COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT:
Obsidian utilizes a parent support group for clerical and academic assistance. Parents also have the opportunity to participate in our Parent Council as well as our advisory groups for school development. Special activities such as ”Parent/Student Exchange Day,” ”Donuts for Dads” and ”Muffins for Moms” promote parents on campus.
Obsidian Middle School is a nationally recognized school that is known for its commitment to the social, emotional, and intellectual development of its students. We enjoy what we do and take pride in our students’ accomplishments. We take a definitive, proactive role in promoting student learning, citizenship and safety.
