Robert ”Bob” Lee Shotwell

Robert ”Bob” Lee Shotwell of Bend died Friday of natural causes. He was 71. A viewing will be held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday and Monday at Niswonger, Reynolds and Tabor Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Powell Butte Christian Church.
Bob Shotwell was born Oct. 7, 1929, in Kansas City, Mo. He married Shirley Haugen on May 3, 1968.
He worked as a schoolteacher for 35 years, starting in Missouri before moving to Lakeview and then Bend in 1966. He taught choir at Bend High School until he retired in 1985. He then moved to Escalon, Calif., and taught at the California Youth Authority before moving back to Central Oregon last December.
He was active in the church in every community he lived in. He also sang in the church choir and was part of a barber shop quartet in Bend in the early ’80s. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife of Prineville; four sons, Jim, Scott and Christopher, all of Bend, and Mike of Littleton, Colo.; three daughters, Anne Avverre of Vancouver, Wash., Cindy Hamrick of Bend and Lynn Hodge of Escalon, Calif.; a brother, Bill of Hawthorne, Calif.; a sister, Beth Wayland of Lynwood, Wash.; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandchild and one sister.

Wilma (Seems) Lowe-Salmons

Wilma (Seems) Lowe-Salmons of Bend died Wednesday. She was 80.
A viewing will be held from 1-5 p.m. Monday at Niswonger, Reynolds and Tabor Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Deschutes Memorial Gardens in Bend.
Mrs. Lowe-Salmons was born Oct. 21, 1921 in Lebanon, Kan., to Wiley and Pearl Seems. She married Robert Lowe in Bend on May 10, 1941.
She taught school in Kansas prior to moving to Oregon. She and her husband owned and operated several businesses in Bend including Lowes Trailer Town, two grocery stores, a feed store and a health food store.
She was affiliated with the Newport Church of Christ and volunteered at the Deschutes County Juvenile Justice Center. She enjoyed fishing, traveling, camping, gardening and card games. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors include her two sons, Gayle Lowe of Bend and Lyle Lowe of Beaverton; four grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Newport Avenue Church of Christ.

Frances Whitney (Cook) James
June 29, 1913 – Sept. 17, 2002
Frances Whitney (Cook) James of Bend died Tuesday of complications following surgery. She was 89.
Mrs. James was born June 29, 1913, in Fort Rock to Francis and Olive (Whitney) Cook. She graduated from Bend High School in 1932. She married Gordon James.
She moved to Eugene briefly and then returned to Bend.
Mrs. James was a homemaker.
She enjoyed cooking and caring for her family and extended family.
She loved to read and after losing her sight enjoyed listening to ”talking books.”
Survivors include her two sons, Randall of Bend and Richard of La Pine; one brother, William Cook of Coquille; and one sister, Louella Dorsey of Seattle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and a sister.
Marjorie Lou (Whitman) Smith
March 28, 1922 – Sept. 15, 2002
Marjorie Lou (Whitman) Smith of Prineville died Sept. 15 of natural causes. She was 80.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Powell Butte Christian Church.
Mrs. Smith was born March 28, 1922, in Greybull, Wyo., to William and Bina (Mack) Whitman.
She graduated high school in 1940 in Enterprise. She married Bernard Carty in 1940.
She was a buyer for a women’s clothing store. She moved to Prineville in 1970 and married Clarence Smith on Nov. 24, 1974, in Powell Butte.
Mrs. Smith was affiliated with Powell Butte Christian Church, Project Love and Home Extension.
She was also affiliated with Trout Unlimited.
She enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and the outdoors. Her hobbies included making dolls, sewing and traveling.
Survivors include her husband of Prineville; three sons, Terry Carty of Pendleton, Vaughn Carty of Prineville and Dan Carty of Bend; one daughter, Maureen Carty of Henderson, Nev.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.
Memorial contributions may be made to Powell Butte Christian Church building fund.

Fred G. Heise
Dec. 5, 1915 – Sept. 19, 2002
Fred G. Heise of Tumalo died Thursday of natural causes. He was 86.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Tumalo Community Church.
Mr. Heise was born Dec. 5, 1915, in Middletown, Ohio. He married Maxine on Aug. 10, 1940, in Inglewood, Calif.
He was a liaison engineer with McDonell-Douglas. He retired in 1970.
Mr. Heise was affiliated with the Tumalo Community Church, Central Oregon Radio Amateurs and the Juniper Golf Club.
He moved to Tumalo in 1978.
Survivors include his wife of Tumalo; one son, Fredrick of Vallejo, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, parents and three brothers.
