REDMOND – Water flooded the halls of Hugh Hartman Middle School this weekend as vandals struck the school for the second time in seven days.

Principal Donna Howard said the vandalism occurred sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning. Teachers discovered the damage Saturday afternoon.

Howard said the school was left in a ”hideous mess.”

The vandals broke in through an unlocked window and destroyed computer equipment in one classroom, breaking monitors and machines that projected power point presentations.

They spray painted graffiti throughout the school, tarnishing walls and the floor with expletives and other vulgar language, she said.

The vandals also destroyed the glass casing on a trophy case, plugged sinks with paper towels and left the faucets on, sending gallons of water into the hallways.

Officials from the Redmond Police Department estimate the damage at $9,500.

That brings the total amount of damage caused by vandals at the school in the past week to $20,000, officer Mike Kidwell said.

Howard said she was shocked and angry that the vandals attacked the school and implored the community to come forward with information that would help apprehend those who caused the damage.

”We shouldn’t have to patrol our school with police,” she said. ”Our schools should be safe. I hope this makes the community angry. Someone out there knows what has happened and why, and I hope they come forward and help us take care of this.”

Officer Kidwell said police patrolled the school grounds from 10:30 to 11 p.m. Friday night. The extent of vandalism was so excessive that officers believe that the damage was done by a group of people, not just an individual.

School officials are offering a reward for information on the destruction, Howard said.

After the first round of vandalism occurred on Nov. 16, officials set the reward at $500. Howard said they may increase that amount.

Vandalism is a felony crime. Adults convicted of vandalism can face prison term ranging of five to 10 years, Kidwell said. However, punishment for juveniles convicted of vandalism may be different.

Officials have few leads on who caused the damage and could not say if they suspected students or other people.

Anyone with information about the damage should call the Redmond Police Department at 504-3400.
