REDMOND – Sibling rivalry can win championships.
Just ask the Green brothers.
Twins David and Christian Green of Sisters battled it out for the individual title at Tuesday’s Class 3A boys state golf championships at The Resort Course at Eagle Crest Resort. In doing so, they led the Outlaws to a convincing team title – Sisters’ second state championship in three years.
The Outlaws finished with a two-day team total of 605, a commanding 33 strokes over runner-up La Grande (638). Siuslaw of Florence was third (659) and Estacada (668) fourth.
David Green fired a 3-under-par 69 on Tuesday, finishing the two rounds with a 4-under-par 140 and the individual title. He edged out Christian, who shot a 73 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 147.
”I’ve been waiting to beat him (Christian) all year in a big tournament,” David said.
”We’re really competitive. He’s been playing the best this year. I figured he was the one to beat, and he got second, so I guess I was right.”
In Monday’s first round, David shot a 71 and led Christian, who shot a 74, by three strokes. After the brothers made the turn on Tuesday, it looked as though Christian would make a run. He shot a front-side 33, gaining a stroke on David, who shot a 34.
But Christian faltered on the back nine, shooting a 40 and paving the way for his twin’s victory.
”I was just thinking about beating (David) on the back nine and I think that’s what got to my head,” Christian said.
The team championship came as no surprise to Sisters coach Jeff Barton. Tuesday was the fifth time that the Outlaws played a round under 300 as a team.
”We’ve been hot the last six weeks, and we kind of slammed the door today,” Barton said. ”We had really high expectations from day one, and to realize them is pretty neat.”
Barton was impressed with David’s scores on both days.
”I don’t think I’ve ever seen a two-day total that’s even close to that,” he said.
Barton added that the two brothers push each other, but the rivalry is always friendly.
”It’s very good-natured and they’re very supportive of one other,” Barton said. ”They don’t go home and beat the snot out of each other. It’s just absolutely positive. They help to push one another and their families are very supportive.
”It’s just a neat family and a neat situation – especially for me.”
Not to be forgotten in the Green golf family is Jonathan, a senior who has signed a letter of intent to golf collegiately for Oregon State. He shot an 82 on Tuesday to finish 21st with a 163.
Scott Barton of Sisters carded a 74 on Tuesday and finished tied for 11th with a total of 155. Jeremy Deboard shot a 91 in the final round and tied for 56th with a 179 to round out the state champs’ scorecard.
”We felt pretty confident,” Christian said. ”I’m not very surprised. We had a really deep team. All the guys are capable of shooting in the 70s. Everyone can shoot even par.”
Top individuals from other schools included Aaron Koch of Taft (78-71-149) and Dale Raybould of Siuslaw (77-72-
149), who tied for third place. Tyler Tucker of La Grande was fifth (76-74-150).
The only competition for David Green was from his brother, and he still managed to beat him by seven strokes. David said he was extremely confident from his first tee shot on.
”I knew I was going to play well,” David said. ”I tried to focus on the whole tournament, and not get too excited or too bummed about a bad shot.”
David said he had been waiting to beat his brother ever since Christian won medalist honors at the three round Central Oregon Classic, which concluded May 9.
”I wanted to get one back and beat him,” David said.
And he managed to do it in the biggest tournament of the year.
