Ella ‘Billie’ E. Ross

June 9, 1905 – May 21, 2003

Ella ”Billie” E. Ross of Bend died Wednesday of natural causes. She was 97.

No service will be held.

Mrs. Ross was born June 9, 1905, near Bado, Okla., to Benjamin and Ida Belle (Blacketer) Davis. She attended school in Kansas. She married Samuel Ross on Nov. 17, 1937, in Carson City, Nev.

Mrs. Ross moved to California in 1922 and lived in Los Angeles, Catalina Island and Sacramento. Following her marriage she lived in Placerville, Calif., before settling in Bend in 1977.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Ross enjoyed cooking and her family.

Survivors include her son, Wayne of Bend; a daughter, Judy Hopkins of Boise, Idaho; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and 17 siblings.

Cornelia Maria (Waltmann) Belknap

July 20, 1933 – May 20, 2003

Cornelia Maria (Waltmann) Belknap of Twickenham in Wheeler County died Tuesday of cancer. She was 69.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Christian Church in Portland. Another memorial service will be held in June in Twickenham.

Mrs. Belknap was born July 20, 1933 in Soesterberg, The Netherlands to Necolaas and Cornelia Waltmann. She married Dr. R. Lee Belknap on June 15, 1957.

Mrs. Belknap moved to Portland in 1954 and worked there before settling on a ranch in Twickenham.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Charles of Seattle and Tom of Portland; two daughters, Maria and Bonnie, both of Los Angeles; a sister, Maria van den Broek of Amstelveen, The Netherlands; and four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony Christian Church in Portland or the Hospice of Redmond, Sisters and Grant County, 732 SW 23rd St., Redmond 97755.

Barbara Jeannette Speer

March 29, 1933 – May 20, 2003

Barbara Jeannette Speer of La Pine died Tuesday of natural causes. She was 70.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Central Pines Funeral Home.

Mrs. Speer was born March 29, 1933, in Afton, Texas, to Joseph and Flossie (Winkle) Donovan. She married Ronald Speer on June 19, 1976, in Las Vegas.

She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Speer was a member of the Deschutes Dusters and Good Sam Chapter.

Her hobbies included fishing, bowling and knitting. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling.

Survivors include her husband of La Pine; a son, Jerry Weaver of San Marcos, Calif.; three daughters, Judy Weaver of Portland, Sandra Weaver of Hamilton, Ala., and Jamie Parker of Vernon, Ala.; two brothers, Joe Donovan of Moses Lake, Wash., and John Laney of Roswell, N.M.; two sisters, June Vineyard of Roswell and Linda Williams of Artesia, N.M.; two grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three sister.

Ragna ‘Kibby’ Andersen

Feb. 23, 1916 – May 19, 2003

Ragna ”Kibby” Andersen of Bend died Monday. She was 87.

A service was held.

Mrs. Andersen was born Feb. 23, 1916, in Terry, Mont., to Jacob and Raghild Fladmo. She married Vernon Anderson on Feb. 1, 1936, in Terry, Mont.

Mrs. Andersen was a homemaker. She lived in Montana and Idaho before moving to Sweet Home in 1974. She moved to Bend several years ago.

She was a member of the Sons of Norway. She enjoyed square dancing and gardening. Survivors include her son Jerry of Bend; a brother, John Fladmo of Sidney, Mont.; a sister, Inga Bergene of Billings, Mont.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother.

Theresa Martina Hatfield

Sept. 26, 1926 – May 21, 2003

Theresa Martina Hatfield of Madras died Wednesday of natural causes. She was 76.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Conservative Baptist Church in Madras.

Mrs. Hatfield was born Sept. 26, 1926, in Enterprise to Clarence and Barbara Burgett. She was in a military training program as a cadet nurse from 1944 to 1947.

She married Donald Hatfield on May 9, 1948, in Heppner.

Mrs. Hatfield was the co-owner of Hatfield’s Department Store.

She was affiliated with the Madras Conservative Baptist Church and a supporter of the Madras Pregnancy Resource Center.

Survivors include her husband of Madras; two sons, John of Madras and Jack of Portland; a daughter, Donna Streamer of Walla Walla, Wash.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Madras Pregnancy Resource Center.

Leonard Glaefke

Oct. 12, 1920 – May 21, 2003

Leonard Glaefke of Bend died May 21 of natural causes. He was 82.

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Redmond Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Glaefke was born Oct. 12, 1920, in Seabeck, Wash., to John and Della Glaefke. He grew up in Monument.

Mr. Glaefke was a long-time resident of John Day. He worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps in Grant County. He was a miner most of his life.

He enjoyed helping others in need, studying the Bible and learning new things. His hobbies included placer mining and studying rock formations.

Survivors include his brother, Lloyd Mantis of Eagle Creek; two sisters, Eleanor Phillips of Sweet Home and Georgia Mantis of Portland; and his special friend, Eleanor Hensley.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Bend-La Pine.

Betty L. Venz

March 5, 1922 – May 16, 2003

Betty L. Venz of Salem died May 16. She was 81.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Discovery Christian Church in Bend.

Mrs. Venz was born March 5, 1922, in Traer, Iowa. She married Vernon Venz on May 1, 1944.

She was a resident of Bend for 45 years.

Survivors include her two daughters, Barbara Kiesow and Carol Adams; a sister, Helen Woock; a granddaughter; and two great-grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to any hospice organization.
