John William Basham

Sept. 22, 1932 – Aug. 28, 2003

John William Basham of Prineville died Thursday. He was 70.

No services are planned.

Mr. Basham was born Sept. 22, 1932, in Paris, Texas, to J.W. and Georgia (King) Basham. He married Dorothy Hayes on Jan. 4, 1957, in Sherman, Texas.

Mr. Basham served in the Marine Corps.

He worked at a lumber mill in California before moving to Prineville in 1969 and working for Consolidated Pine and Louisiana Pacific.

Mr. Basham enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, volunteering and visiting with friends at The Neat Repeat.

Survivors include his wife of Prineville; a daughter, Shirley of Prineville; and a grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.

Robert Franklin Rhoads

Feb. 7, 1916 – Aug. 29, 2003

Robert Franklin Rhoads of Bend died Friday of natural causes. He was 87.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Bend.

Mr. Rhoads was born Feb. 7, 1916, in Pleasant Valley to Walter and Ellen (Forsgren) Rhoads. He attended Cedar Grade School in Gresham and Benson Technical High School in Portland, where he was a champion wrestler. Mr. Rhoads then studied engineering at Oregon State University.

He married Dorothy Boslar in December 1941, in Gresham.

Mr. Rhoads worked as an engineer for Boeing in Seattle and Renton for 38 years. In 1957, he earned a business administration degree from the University of Washington. He retired in 1978 and moved to Bend.

Mr. Rhoads was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Bend and enjoyed skiing, hiking, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of Bend; a son, Jon of Bend; a daughter, Mary Buxton of Bend; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Bend, Hospice of Bend-La Pine, the Central Oregon Community College Foundation or The High Desert Museum.

Mildred Leona Smith

March 7, 1918 – Aug. 27, 2003

Mildred Leona Smith of Salem died Wednesday of natural causes. She was 85.

A visitation will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Monday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Dallas Mortuary Chapel in Dallas. A funeral service be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Dallas Mortuary Chapel.

Mrs. Smith was born March 7, 1918, in Amsterdam, Idaho, to William and Nellie (Sligar) Skinner. She married C. Roy Smith on Sept. 15, 1939, in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and a former resident of Bend. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, fishing and camping.

Survivors include her sons, Jerry of Dallas and Don of Glendale, Ariz.; a daughter, LaDella Farmer of Silverton; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Dallas Mortuary Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mark R. Lee

May 20, 1957 – Aug. 26, 2003

Mark R. Lee of Bend died Tuesday of pancreatic cancer. He was 46.

A private service will be held.

Mr. Lee was born May 20, 1957, in Nuernberg, Germany to Bruce and Inge Lee. He married Marian Iturra on Oct. 4, 1980, in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Mr. Lee worked as a cook.

Survivors include his wife of Bend; a son, Christopher of Bend; a brother, Michael of Bend; two sisters, Sandra Shay and Debbie Spears, both of Sacramento, Calif.; and his parents of Sacramento, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to Central Oregon Hospice.
