Five years ago, Linda Kimmel never thought she would be starting a family business with her husband and son. Linda and her husband Barry were living in Olympia, Wash. Barry had a clinical audiology practice and Linda was doing the books for his practice. But the couple knew they wanted to retire in Sunriver.

They ended up talking to the owners of a bakery in Sunriver, who happened to be selling their business around the time the Kimmels were moving. The Kimmels bought the bakery and their son, Brad, a baker in Spokane, Wash., moved to Sunriver and become a partner in the business. Since 1999, the family has been operating Hot Lava Baking Company in the Sunriver Mall. Brad, a graduate of the American Culinary Institute makes all of the bakery’s bread, bagels, cakes and cookies fresh at the shop. The business has remained about the same size in terms of employees, but has kept customers coming back by word of mouth and the fresh-baked cinnamon rolls, bagels and doughnuts.
