ALBANY – Mountain placed third Saturday at the South Albany Invitational volleyball tournament, which included three Intermountain Conference teams.

The Cougars split two matches and lost one match in pool play. They then went to defeat Sheldon of Eugene 19-25, 25-22, 15-11 in bracket play, but fell to North Medford 25-22, 25-22.

Mountain View coach Jill Waskom was pleased with the performance of her team.

”Everyone added something,” Waskom said.

Crook County went 5-1 overall at the tournament. The Cowgirls defeated West Albany and Columbia River, and split with Sheldon in pool play. In bracket play, Crook County lost to West Linn, and finished tied for fifth.

Bend High placed 11th overall, splitting two matches, losing two matches, and winning a single match by beating out Springfield, 13-25, 27-25, 15-13.

Bend coach Brock Olson noted the exceptional play of Sarah Sjogren who recorded 33 kills, 17 aces and seven blocks, as well as the performance of Kaytlin Van Burger who logged 30 kills, five aces and three blocks.

Sisters takes second at Madras

MADRAS – Sisters reached the championship match of the Madras Invitational, where the Outlaws were defeated by Dufur 25-23, 25-22 for the title at the six-team tournament. Sisters had earlier defeated Dufur in round-robin play, where the Outlaws posted a 5-0 record. ”It was a great day,” said Sisters coach Chris Crosby. ”We would have liked to finish off Dufur again, but they’re a pretty good team for a 1A school.” Ashley Sweeney of Sisters was named to the all-tournament team, as were Susan Ahern of Madras, Chelsea Russell of La Pine, Angela Lindell of Dufur, Jessie Gelish of Pleasant Hill and Cara Harrigan of the Bend junior varsity.

Summit ties for seventh

LONGVIEW, Wash. – Summit recorded one win, one tie and three losses at the Mark Morris Tournament. The Storm fell to River Ridge in its final game, 25-21, 14-25, 12-15. Summit coach Susie Gage commented on the defensive play of Bry Halligan who had 26 digs and served 44 for 47 with six aces. Corrie Laing served a 100-percent clip with three aces. Summit will host Redmond Thursday.

Culver 22-21-21

ATHENA – The TigerScots swept the Lady Bulldogs in three games to win the Columbia Basin Conference match. Despite the close outcome, Culver coach Jennifer Lee was disappointed with the performance of her team. ”We weren’t playing our best game today. We were flat,” said Lee.

Gilchrist improves

Gilchrist claimed one win on the day, beating Central Christian in the Bronze division championship, 25-10, 25-13. ”I think we played better,” said Gilchrist coach Rick Jenkins. Jenkins commented on the play of Tosha Scevers who served 28 for 32 from the service line with nine aces. Hailee Smith served up 33 points and added 13 kills. Central Christian had a disappointing outing, losing all four matches. White Tigers coach Lon Austin mentioned Jennelle Johnson for her aggressive defensive play.
