The Prineville-based millwork company American Pine Products has a new owner and a new name after it was sold recently to Woodgrain Millwork, an Idaho-based wood products manufacturer.

Woodgrain Millwork, a door, window and moulding manufacturer, with headquarters in Fruitland, Idaho, bought American Pine for approximately $13.8 million from its parent company, Huttig Building Products, according to a Huttig news release.

Now under its fifth owner since it opened in 1959, American Pine will be known as Woodgrain Millwork. Huttig bought American Pine in 1994 and the Prineville plant employs about 375 to 400 people. Huttig said it would use sale proceeds to reduce its debt, according to the release. Huttig representatives did not return calls for comment on Monday.

Woodgrain is the largest American manufacturer of interior pine doors and has 24 operations including two other plants in Oregon, said Mike Ball, the vice president of the company’s millwork division.

Woodgrain and American Pine had been competitors until the sale went through after six months of negotiations.

Nine employees lost their jobs due to the changeover because their positions were similar to ones at Woodgrain, Ball said. They included salaried and hourly-wage positions, but neither Ball nor American Pine’s General Manager Steve Forrester would say what jobs had been eliminated. Forrester said Huttig gave the employees severance packages.

With restructuring done, Ball, the vice president, said no other positions should be eliminated. There will be minor differences in employee benefits packages due to the ownership switch, but wages should stay the same, Ball said.
