Staying found is an essential outdoor skill.

The Mountaineers Books has published the second edition of ”Wilderness Navigation” by Bob Burns and Mike Burns, which combines the latest technology with time-tested methods of safe navigation.

The new edition includes the addition of the section-range-township method of land surveying, an update to the descriptions of compasses and GPS receivers on the market and updated declination maps.

The volume includes sections on the essentials of using map and compass, why you still need map and compass skills in the GPS age, GPS pointers, accurate use of clinometers and altimeters, illustrated examples of orientation and navigation, and an appendix with 30 practice problems.

Bob Burns is a longtime member of The Mountaineers. He’s taught classes in the use of map and compass since the late 1970s.

Mike Burns is an avid climber and climbing and navigation instructor. He’s written articles for Climbing Magazine.

Together, Burns and Burns wrote the navigation chapter in the seventh edition of ”Mountaineering: Freedom of the Hills.”

Published by The Mountaineers Books, ”Wilderness Navigation” is a 144-page trade paperback. It retails for $12.95.
