A hot and hearty tradition Bend landmark Jake’s Diner will re-open next week

Jake’s Truck Stop will shut its doors at 8 p.m. on Friday.

But for those who have had a hankering for a beefy burger and mountain of fries and haven’t made it out to the Bend landmark, there’s good news – there is still time.

The truck stop, gas station, convenient store and diner will close on Friday.

But on Tuesday, Oct. 19, Jake’s Diner will be re-open under a new owner.

Kim Wolfe, Jake’s Truck Stop co-owner, said he decided to sell the business because someone approached him with an interest in buying the property. The new buyers have not been identified.

Wolfe said he sold his equipment to his diner manager Lyle Hicks and is allowing him to use the Jake’s name.

Hicks, who has worked at Jake’s for 23 years, has signed a lease with the new owners to resurrect the diner in the same location, for at least the next few months.

”Right now we are on a six-month lease and after that we will be month-to-month, so they can decide what they are going to do,” Hicks said.

Hick said if the new owners, who are expected to sign the papers to take over ownership of the property on Friday, decide that the diner doesn’t fit in with their plans he will look for a new location in town.

Although the crew and food will remain the same, Hicks said the hours of the diner will change. Starting Tuesday, the diner will be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Hicks said with the truck stop closed there is no reason to keep the diner open 24 hours a day.

Hicks said the customers are excited about his decision to keep the diner alive and one customer cried when he told her about the plans.

”For the most part, everyone is happy,” Hicks said. ”The hardest part is going to be getting word out that we are still open.”

It is still unclear what the new owners have planned for the more than six-acre parcel of land at the south end of Bend.

During a pre-application meeting July 15 between city planners and CIDA, a Portland-based engineering and architectural firm that has an office in Bend, preliminary plans were submitted that show Jake’s being taken down completely and replaced with various retail development.
