The Crook County Planning Commission is scheduled to hold the first public hearing Tuesday on Bend Trap Club’s request to develop a recreation campground and shooting range on a 633-acre parcel south of Highway 126.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Crook County meeting room on Court Street.
The trap club wants to develop a chunk of Crook County-owned land off George Millican Road on the south side of Highway 126. It’s about 10 miles south of the Les Schwab Tire Centers distribution center, on the east side of George Millican Road.
The move would give the 200-member club a new home and a chance to expand its operations. The trap club is currently located on a 40-acre site in Bend off Brosterhous Road that has been increasingly surrounded by residential development.
The trap club plans to build 26 trap fields, an increase from the nine trap ranges at the Bend facility. The development plan also proposes a sporting clay course, where participants would shoot while walking a marked trail.
The trap club also wants to establish campgrounds for tents and recreation vehicles that could have as many as 243 campsites. There would be RV spots with hookups for sewer, water and electricity, the application shows.
On a 40-acre portion of the parcel, the trap club also plans to build rustic cabins for overnight stays. The cabins would not be available for month-to-month leasing or rental.
Lastly, the trap club wants to build a 3,800-square-foot clubhouse for its members that could accommodate up to 125 people.
The land is zoned for exclusive farm use and the club would need a conditional-use permit to build its facilities. The area is also considered general deer and antelope winter range.
Trap club members have entered into negotiations with Crook County officials to buy the site, which the county originally bought to place a regional landfill.
