State team gets lift from Bend runners

BEAVERTON – Oregon swept Washington on Sunday in the 2004 Washington-Oregon BorderClash, and runners from Bend were among the scorers for the victorious boys and girls teams.

The BorderClash is an interstate high school cross-country race staged at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton. Now in its sixth year, the meet invites the top 40 boys and the top 40 girls from each state’s cross-country championships.

Oregon won the boys race, scoring 103 points to Washington’s 109. On the girls side, Oregon’s girls won more convincingly, scoring 93 points to Washington’s 117.

The top 10 placers from each state figured into the scoring in both divisions.

Kenyon Neuman, a senior from Bend’s Summit High School and runner-up at the Oregon Class 4A meet earlier this month in Eugene, was the fourth Oregon finisher Sunday, seventh overall on the 4,600-meter course with a time of 14 minutes, 10.95 seconds.

Chris Grever, a senior at Bend High, was a surprise scorer for Oregon. The No. 23 finisher in the state 4A meet, Grever posted a time of 14:34.16 on Sunday to finish 10th for his team, 21st overall.

Kenny Klotz, a junior from Central Catholic High of Portland, was the overall boys champion with a time of 14:02.02. Laef Barnes of Washington was a close second in 14:02.61.

Other Central Oregon runners representing Oregon in the BorderClash were Anthony Moorman of Bend’ Mountain View High (17th for Oregon, 34th overall, 14:45.77); Kenny Thissell of La Pine (33rd for Oregon, 68th overall, 15:18.53); and Dylan Coleman of Bend High (38th for Oregon, 74th overall, 15:34.23).

Total times for the boys teams were 2 hours, 23 minutes, 8.72 seconds for Oregon, 2:23:26.92 for Washington.

In the girls race, Bend’s Zoe Roy finished eighth among Oregon runners and 16th overall in 17:14.48. Roy, a senior at Summit High, was the lone Central Oregon entry in the girls competition.

Washington’s Brianna Felnagle was the easy winner of the girls race, posting a time of 16:29.09 that was more than 20 seconds faster than runner-up Holli Dieu’s 16:49.68.

Dieu, a junior at Coquille High School and the reigning state Class 3A cross-country champion, was the top finisher Sunday for Oregon.

Total times for the girls teams were 2 hours, 50 minutes, 36.75 seconds for Oregon, 2:50:48.29 for Washington.
