The Crook County Landfill will hold a free disposal day on Saturday, May 21, for people to drop off yard debris, appliances and recyclables at no charge.

The free landfill day will be open to anyone who wants to dump yard waste, nonfunctioning appliances such as washers and dryers, and recyclables such as cardboard and newspaper. Used motor oil will also be accepted at no charge.

The landfill will accept these items from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The landfill is located at 5601 Houston Lake Road, on the north side of Highway 126 near the Prineville Airport.

There will be a charge for household garbage, tires and hazardous waste, said Landfill Manager Alan Keller. The landfill charges $25 a ton for household waste, with an $8 minimum, he said.

There is a minimum fee of $2 per tire to dispose of rubber tires.

The landfill is scheduled to hold a free hazardous waste collection day on Saturday, June 4 at the Crook County High School from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., he said.

The county landfill also has an ongoing free electronic recycling program where people can dispose of used computers and monitors, televisions, telephones and power cables.

The free landfill day next Saturday is the first one to be held in Crook County and could become an annual event, said Crook County Judge Scott Cooper. Officials hope it will spur a communitywide cleanup effort.
