A Bend man was arraigned on Friday on multiple charges, including two counts of manslaughter, in connection with the death of 43-year-old Gale Dorsey Heising last month. Steven Keith Donoghue, 37, appeared in Deschutes County Circuit Court by video monitor. His attorney, Brendon Alexander, asked Judge A. Michael Adler for a later hearing date to allow time for Donoghue to undergo a psychological evaluation. Donoghue has been charged with six counts of assault, two counts of manslaughter and one count of criminally negligent homicide. According to an earlier news release, Donoghue had been returning bottles at Erickson’s Sentry Market on April 22 when he was approached by Heising. After a brief encounter, Donoghue allegedly struck Heising once in the face. Police later found Heising outside the market, unconscious and bleeding from the head. He was transported to St. Charles Medical Center-Bend, where he died May 1 as a result of his injuries. An autopsy performed by the State Medical Examiner’s office on May 4 revealed that Heising died as a result of head trauma. An investigation by the Bend Police Department identified Donoghue as the person who allegedly committed the assault, and he was taken into custody May 5.Donoghue is scheduled to appear for a hearing before Judge Alta J. Brady on June 13.
