Fly-Tying Corner: Para Purple Haze

There’s no denying that purple is a great color for Deschutes River summer steelhead. Why not try it for trout?

Try an attractor pattern called the Para Purple Haze the next time you fish the Deschutes, Crooked or Metolius river.

Consider tying this fly on your line when the day is cloudy and you’re expecting a hatch of small mayflies such as blue-winged olives or pale evening duns. The parachute tie makes the fly alight softly and ride low. It’s a good choice in smooth water off the main riffle.

Tie the Para Purple Haze with purple thread on a No. 12-16 dry fly hook. Use elk hair for the tail and four-strand purple floss for the body. Tie in a white calf tail wing post.

Use grizzly hackle, wrapped around the wing post and finish at the head.
