Skateboarding is a sport

I would like to give someone my thoughts on the issues of skateboarding.

After reading the article on a recent front page, I was sad and discouraged. I am a mother of a skateboarder. Skateboarding has evolved so much over the past 10 years. It is not just a hobby anymore; it is a sport, and more and more kids are becoming interested. I do partially understand the concern regarding some of the damage that occurs while the kids skate, but if there was a place designated for our kids to skate, those issues could be resolved.

My statement is mainly for Mayor David Elliott. I believe that you are part of the reason that skateboarders have a bad name! It is not fair to say that ”skateboarders are belligerent as a matter of fact,” a quote by Mr. Elliott. Have they ever really watched the kids skate? Some of the tricks that they can do are amazing! Like I mentioned above, skateboarding is a sport that takes practice, determination and skill.

Skateboarders are not criminals. Some kids who like to skate may be disrespectful, but it is unfair to stereotype skaters as criminals. If our children who live in a small city with not much to do like to skate, then create a place for them! And for kids to be afraid of the police, what kind of message does that get across?

I live in Bend and I am so thankful for the skateparks here, especially the Local 5-0 indoor skate park. It is a safe place for my son to skate with his friends. I suggest that Mayor Elliott actually take the time to get to know some of our children in the community who skate and he will find out that they are great kids who just want to have fun!
