The Bulletin welcomes contributions to its weekly Community Sports Events Calendar. Items should be mailed to Bulletin Sports Department, P.O. Items are published on a space-availability basis, and should be submitted at least 10 days before the event.

BADMINTON

Wednesdays – Bend Badminton Club public play, 8-10 p.m., Athletic Club of Bend basketball gym. All levels of play offered. Rackets furnished, showers available. Cost: $6. Contact: Dave Grusy, 923-2523.

CYCLING

Thursdays in September – Thrilla in the Milla is a cyclocross bike racing series held each Thursday in September in Bend’s Old Mill District. Register from 5 to 5:45 p.m. in the parking lot on Southwest Columbia Street. Races start at 6 a.m. Cost: $10 per race or $40 for the series. OBRA license required. Course is 1 to 3 kilometers and races last about an hour. Information: www.webcyclery. com or 318-6188.

Sunday – Hutch’s Metric Century is a 100-kilometer (62 miles) noncompetitive group road ride. The ride begins and ends at Tumalo State Park. The route is mostly small rollers with one food stop. Entry fee is $5 and includes maps, mechanical support, energy food and drink. Meet at Tumalo State Park, at 9 a.m. Contact: 382-6248 or 382-9253.

Sept. 10 – Prineville to Post Double Back is a 100-mile road bike ride. This is a poker ride for individuals or 2- and 4-person teams. Riders collect cards for a poker hand worth up to $50. Sept. 11 – Sunnyside Century is a 100-mile loop around Mount Bachelor. Noncompetitive group road ride includes two food stations. Ride begins at 8 a.m. Cost: $15. Day-of-ride registration at 7 a.m. at Sunnyside Sports, 930 NW Newport Ave., Bend or preregister at the shop. Contact: 382-8018.

Sept. 18 – Skull Hollow Roubaix is a 58-mile bicycle race near Smith Rock State Park. The course is a mix between pavement and dirt roads. Cyclocross bikes are recommended. DUATHLON

Sept. 11 – Banzai Duathlon is a 27-mile road bike ride on the Cascade Lakes Highway from Elk Lake to the Inn of the Seventh Mountain in Bend followed by 10-kilometer road and trail run in the Deschutes National Forest. USA Triathlon-sanctioned race is the 2005 Northwest Regional Championship. Cost for individuals, $55; teams, $90. To register, contact Gina at 318-7388 or online at freshairsports.com.

FOOTBALL

Saturdays – Registration open for Start Smart Football for youth ages 5-7, offered by Bend Metro Parks and Recreation District. Sessions are from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. from Sept. 10 to Oct. 15 at Sky View Middle School. Parents must accompany their children at practices. Program designed to prepare children for organized football in fun environment. Cost: $38 for in-district participants, $51 otherwise. Contact: 389-7275.

Today – Eighth annual Sunrise to Summit hill climb begins at 10:30 a.m. at Mount Bachelor’s Sunrise Lodge and finishes at the top of the Summit chairlift, for a net elevation gain of 2,600 feet. Sept. 17 – Log Jam Festival includes two shows of axe throwing, choker setting, chopping, tree topping, pole climbing, bucking, birling, sawing across from Farewell Bend Park in the Old Mill District. Festival is free for spectators. Shows start at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. with a log rolling competition at 1 p.m. Part of Bend centennial celebration. Contact: Lori at 382-6403.

RUNNING

Sept. 10 – Seventh annual Pilot Butte Challenge, one-mile timed summit run for all ages and abilities. Begins from 9 a.m. to noon depending on category. Sept. 11 – Banzai 10K is a 6.2-mile road and trail run held near the Inn of the Seventh Mountain in the Deschutes National Forest. Race held in conjunction with the Banzai Triathlon and Duathlon. Cost: $15 before Sept. 9. Registration/ information at www.freshairsports. com or 318-7388.

Sept. 25 – The 2005 Bigfoot 10K run is a 6.2-mile road run on a downhill course from the Inn of the Seventh Mountain to the Les Schwab Amphitheater in Bend. Proceeds benefit high-school cross country teams in the Bend-La Pine School District.

Oct. 9 – Just Around the Bend marathon, half-marathon and 10-kilometer run. 8 a.m. start, marathon and half-marathon;, 9 a.m. start, 10K. Proceeds go to The Center Foundation. Entry forms: at FootZone, Athletic Club of Bend, or at www.bend-marathon.com.

Tuesdays – Fun run, 6 p.m., departs FootZone in Bend, through October. Runs alternate between trail and road, and last approximately 45 minutes. Free. Contact: 317-3568.

Thursdays – Women’s running group, 5:30 p.m., departs FootZone in Bend. Pace ranges from nine- to 12-minute miles, distances from two to four miles. Free. Contact: Julie, 390-2081.

Ongoing – Twice-weekly training runs for Just Around the Bend marathon, half-marathon and 10-kilometer run. Wednesdays at 6 p.m., Sundays at 8 a.m. Location varies. Individual coaching available. Information: WillRace Performance, 350-3938.

Ongoing – Saturday morning long trail runs with the Central Oregon Running Klub. Group departs at 8 a.m. from Drake Park on the east side of the Deschutes River across from the footbridge. Length varies from six to 18 miles with varying speeds. Information: www. centraloregonrunningklub.org.

SOCCER

Ongoing – Registration open for the Bend Metro Park and Recreation District’s Fall Adult Recreational Soccer program. Games are played on Sunday afternoons beginning Sept. 11. Leagues offered in co-ed 18 and older and 30 and older teams. All games played at Skyline Sports Complex in Bend. Deadline to register is 5 p.m. on Friday. Cost: $32 in-district, $43 out-of-district. TRIATHLON

Sept. 11 – Banzai Triathlon is a .93-mile swim at Elk Lake, followed by a 27-mile road bike ride on the Cascade Lakes Highway from Elk Lake to the Inn of the Seventh Mountain in Bend. Race concludes with a 10-kilometer road and trail run in the Deschutes National Forest. USA Triathlon-sanctioned race is the 2005 Northwest Regional Championship. WATER SPORTS

Sept. 10 – Third annual Rumble on the River White Water Festival includes an R2 boatercross event for experienced boaters. Invididual kayakers or two-person teams of rafters compete on a half-mile stretch of the Deschutes River on a timed course that includes four Class 3 rapids and one Class 2 rapid. Boat size limited to 10 to 14 feet in length. Register from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Big Eddy parking lot. Races begin at 10:30 a.m. Early registration at Alder Creek, Skjersaas and Rapid River Rafters on Sept. 9. Cost: Preregistration, $15 per person; day-of-race, $20 per person.
