How to help Hurricane Katrina victims

For those wishing to donate money to aid hurricane victims, the following organizations are accepting donations or holding fundraisers.
* The Deschutes Democratic Party will host a community hurricane house party Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Bend Community Center, 1036 NE Fifth St. Simultaneous house parties across the country will raise money for the Red Cross International, Convoy of Hope, Habitat for Humanity, and The Humane Society of the United States. * Jefferson County Artist Jeanie Smith will donate half of her proceeds from a gallery showing that debuts from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at Art Adventure Gallery in Madras to Hurricane Katrina victims.
Smith will donate half of her commissions to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina victims, according to a gallery news release. Donations will continue through September.

* The American Red Cross: 1-800-HELP-NOW, www.redcross.org, or visit the local Red Cross headquarters on Twin Knolls Drive in Bend to donate. Checks should be made to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
* Northwest Medical Teams: www.nwmedicalteams .org. People also can call 1-800-959-4325 to donate or send checks to Northwest Medical Teams, P.O. Box 10, Portland, OR 97207.
* Wells Fargo bank has opened accounts on behalf of the Portland-based Mercy Corps relief agency, the American Red Cross and the United Way for any members of the public who want to help.
Gifts to the ”Mercy Corps Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund” account, the ”American Red Cross – Katrina Relief” account or the ”United Way Katrina Relief Fund” account can be made at any Wells Fargo banking store.
* Mercy Corps is also accepting donations online at www.mercy corps.org.
* Oregon State Police troopers are loading four semi-trailers loaded with supplies, drinking water and other items to help their fellow troopers in Mississippi and Louisiana, according to Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Jeff Leighty. Central Oregonians can help cover the cost of fuel to transport the donated items.
Monetary donations may be made through the Oregon State Police Officers’ Association’s Hurricane Fund at 1-800-503-BEAR (2327).
