Single shot helps give Summit victory over Bend

Bend High had hopes of wrapping up the Intermountain Conference girls soccer championship. Summit had other ideas.

The Storm made its lone shot on goal for the entire match count – a deflection during a scramble that found its way into the back of the net – for a 1-0 victory over the Lava Bears Thursday afternoon at the 15th Street soccer field in Bend.

On a day when Bend dominated offensive play, Summit was able to capitalize on the one break that had the biggest influence on the outcome of the game.

”We went in with a strategy to negate Bend’s game, which is to play direct and fast,” said first-year Summit head coach Jamie Brock. ”It paid off. We played with a lot of composure, especially when they were pressuring us.”

Thursday’s victory improved Summit’s league record to 5-1-1 and overall mark to 10-2-1. The Storm, with 16 points in league play, remains in third place in the IMC standings.

For Summit to move up and overtake either Bend or Mountain View, which are tied atop the IMC with identical 6-1-0 conference records and 18 points, it must beat Crook County in its league finale on Tuesday and have either the Cougars lose Tuesday against Redmond or the Lava Bears fall to Crook County next Thursday.

”It was a big win for us, especially with the way we’ve played the last couple of games before this,” said Brock, whose squad lost to Mountain View 4-1 last Thursday and tied Hood River Valley 1-1 on Tuesday. ”Confidencewise, this should really help. Our girls now realize they are an excellent team.”

Summit’s score came about seven minutes before halftime as Savannah Knighten sent a long ball toward the goal from about 35 yards out. Bend keeper Autumn Van Meter made the save on the initial shot, but the loose ball eventually went into the back of the net after a mad scramble in front of the net.

”Give credit to Summit, they played hard, got their goal, and made it hold up,” said Bend High coach Hector West, whose Lava Bears (9-4-0 overall) had their nine-match winning streak snapped.

Bend was the aggressor on offense throughout the match, especially in the second half. The Lava Bears pounded the ball goalward, sending 14 shots toward the net – all to no avail.

Two of the Lava Bears’ best scoring chances came late in the match. The first, a crossing pass from the right wing by Rachel Harding that was headed over the goal by Kaitlyn Tebbs, came with about nine minutes remaining. Then, one minute later, Courtney Black launched a shot from 20 yards out that hit the crossbar and bounced away.

”That’s soccer,” said West. ”It’s a game of creating chances and converting on those chances … and we just didn’t convert.

”Anyone who has ever played this game understands that you’re going to experience games like this.”

The top three teams in the league have now beaten one another: Bend beat Mountain View, which beat Summit, which has now beaten Bend.

”It shows in girls soccer that the team that shows up on that day can win,” said Brock. ”This is the first time our program has beat Bend in girls soccer, so this is pretty big for us.”
