Nursery goes light on fright

Walking into Landsystems Nursery Sunday afternoon – with sunny blue skies, the gentle sound of wind chimes and neat rows of potted Aspens, it was hard to imagine that it was home to a haunted house.
But just a few feet away, spiders, skeletons, severed hands and cobwebs were sending chills down children’s spines.
For the last 12 years, Landsystems Nursery at 21336 E. Highway 20 has been host to a haunted house. Part of a greenhouse sales area is converted into a maze of Halloween frights, known as Creepy Hollow.
”I wanted to get spooked, I guess,” said 9-year-old Alison Lowe on why she was visiting the nursery Sunday afternoon.
The nursery staff changes the decorations each year inside the haunted house, which is a maze of hay bales and is darkly lit. No one jumps out to scare children and there is little blood for Halloween standards, making it ”spooky not scary,” Manager Cindy Jeffers said.
”It’s geared toward all ages. But, it’s scary enough for the 6- to 8-year-olds,” she said. ”Kids need to come out and be aware of the flowers, plants and earth.”
The haunted house is open until Oct. 31.
