Tire traction and chains laws confusing for drivers

Your recent news article on tire chains in snow was timely. Oregon travelers, beware of ODOT signs reading: ”Chains Required – Traction tires allowed on vehicles under 10,000 GVW” When stopped by state patrol on Santiam Pass, we were required to put chains on our Honda Accord, even though we had four studded tires. On Nov. 30 at approximately 11:00 a.m. it was not snowing, the road was sanded and in good condition. When we asked about the ”traction tires allowed” sign, we were given the booklet, ”Chains and Traction Tires – a Guide,” as were a dozen or so other cars that were pulled over. After reading every word, I wonder if it really means what it says or maybe I wonder what it says. Reminds me of Oregon’s school zone speed laws.
